Lucy stuck her hands in the pockets of her coat as she walked alongside Nikolas. The last time she talked with Roger she had practically promised him that she would bring Nikolas along the next time they hung out with each other. However, as Lucy sneaked a glance at Nikolas, she realized it might have been a good idea to warn him about the situation she was bringing him into. The last time she had spoke to Roger about Nikolas, she could tell that his opinion of the other boy was not quite on the same level as her opinion.

But this lunch was meant to change that.

Lucy respected Roger's opinion more so than most of her other friends. If he didn't like someone, there was usually a pretty good reason behind it. However, that fell short when it came to the Slytherin house. This was Lucy's way of pointing out to Roger that Nikolas was clearly a special sort of case.

She looked back again at Nikolas. "Thanks for coming," she said, a smile following. "I'm really happy that you and Roger are finally going to be able to meet."

The Hogsmeade weekend couldn't have been timed better, as Nikolas had been feeling more trapped at Hogwarts than ever. It was always this way by the time March rolled around. He'd been back from the Christmas holiday too long for there to be any novelty to being back at the castle, and there was far too long to go before the summer arrived.

Today's outing had seen him in a bright mood, and it was even better for having Lucy there. He wasn't sure about her friend that they were having lunch with, though. Nikolas had a very fractured idea of who Roger Davies was. All he recalled was that he'd been on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team - had he been the captain? - and had gone to the Yule Ball with that really good-looking French girl who'd been one of the Tri-Wizard champions. Other than that, Nikolas didn't know anything about Roger, and couldn't really imagine that there'd be anything to worry about today.

"I think it'll be fun," Nikolas replied, looking back at her earnestly. "How did you two get to be friends, anyway? He was quite a few years older, right?"

Although perhaps the last week or so had been rather strained for Lucy and Nikolas, it was quite amazing how quickly they had bounced back. She wasn't sure who she thought she was kidding when she said she needed some time. Regardless of any given situation they'd found themselves in, it seemed that they enjoyed each others company enough to let it all slide.

As the wind whipped, Lucy brushed a hand through her hair.

"He finished about two years ago now," she said nodding her head. A wry smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as she thought back to their first meeting. "He was my tutor, actually. I was rubbish in Charms my third and fourth years and he spent a lot of time working with me. We've been incredibly close ever since."

Not many could understand the relationship - as the two were so very different. But it seemed to work perfectly for them.

Nikolas was glad they had been continuing on with this as though it were normal, and that none of the things that had happened over the past few weeks had. He always felt tired, lately, and he knew it was because of classes, Quidditch, Animagi training, his family...the list went on. But, stupid as it sounded to him when he thought of it, being able to spend time with Lucy always made him feel a lot better about things, at least for a while. It was certainly helping him to push aside the fact that earlier this morning he'd finally received an owl from home, and still hadn't opened it.

As though to remind himself that right now was not the time to dwell on any of that, he reached over to her hand and took it in his casually. This was beginning to feel perfectly normal, finally.

"Got it," he said, figuring that seeing them interact with each other today would say more than her brief history had. "Nice of him to stay in touch all this time."

They drew up on The Three Broomsticks, and Nikolas caught sight of a young man waiting outside, near the door. The face clicked in his mind, and Nikolas was fairly certain this was Roger. He leaned over to Lucy and said as an aside, "That's him, right?"

Roger had beat Lucy to the Three Broomsticks this time, despite stopping by Honeydukes right before he had headed to their meeting spot. He had decided against going inside alone only because he knew that if he sat down at a table with empty seats, someone might recognize him and come over to talk to him. It didn't happen nearly enough for it to be a real concern, but he didn't want to risk it that day.

Today would be the day he would meet the infamous Nikolas Vaisey. He wasn't sure what Lucy saw in the guy, but Roger was willing enough to meet the Slytherin and see if he lived up to his House's stereotypes or prove Roger's fears wrong. Roger hoped that it would be the latter case, if only because he wanted Lucy to be happy. Which wasn't, for a surprising first, the only thing he was concerned about.

In times like these, where blood status meant the world to some wrongly important people, things could go horribly wrong for Muggleborns. Roger wanted to be sure that Lucy could be safe, while involved with this Vaisey character. Did that sound overprotective? Yes. But that wasn't going to change the fact that Roger wouldn't hesitate to beat Vaisey's face in if something seemed off during their first meeting.

He had been smiling at people walking by, winking occasionally at a woman now and then, when he caught sight of Lucy walking with a wizard. His smile melted into a more neutral expression for just a second, before he perked up and raised his hand to wave at Lucy.

"Excuse me, but I seemed to have misplaced my friend," Roger said conversationally, as he closed the gap between the approaching pair. "She's about your height and she's a blonde too. Actually, she looks a lot like you and...Lucy?" He grinned at her then, before pulling her into a hug. It was obvious that the pair didn't see each other nearly enough.

Once she caught sight of Roger leaning against the wall of the Three Broomsticks, she gave Nikolas' hand a tight squeeze before a wide grin spread across her lips. There were not many people that Lucy could call her close friends, in fact, it fell to one hand, perhaps. And for the first time, two of her favorites were standing right among each other. She only hoped that they would get along well enough so that this wouldn't turn into something incredibly awkward.

Or worse.

She stifled a laugh as Roger walked toward them, something funny coming out of his mouth as per usual. She spared a glance at Nikolas before she dropped his hand to return the hug that Roger was surely going to give her at any moment. She threw her arms around his neck, a tight squeeze following. The last time she had seen Roger, a thousand things had seemed to happen. Although she had managed to keep him informed of everything, it was nice to finally see him in person.

"Aren't you so funny today," she said teasingly, her eyes briefly closing as she held tight onto him. Finally letting him go, she bridged the gap between he and Nikolas. "Roger- this is Nikolas. Nikolas- Roger."

Never having been one for hand-shaking, unless it was at some formal event and his parents were going to be there watching, Nikolas wasn't sure if Roger was going to try to shake his hand, or just nod at him, or what. He settled for being polite but seeing what the older wizard would do.

"Hi," he offered, standing his ground. "It's, ah, good to meet you, finally. Lucy talks about you a lot."

Well, she did. Before, when he and Lucy had just been meeting to study, Nikolas had actually assumed she had some sort of crush on Roger. Now, though, it sort of seemed like it was more of a sibling relationship. He thought about how this might be if it were him meeting someone Astrid were dating, years down the road, and suddenly it occurred to him that maybe Roger was skeptical about this whole thing. Aware that this might be the case, Nikolas made a mental note not to say anything stupid today.

The twins were really rubbing off on him, when it came to his sense of humour, but he had always been that playful when it came to Lucy. They might have not shared blood, but they were as close as siblings in all ways that truly mattered.

Once he had let Lucy go, he glanced over to Nikolas and considered how to approach him. Based on looks alone, Roger could only accuse him of being well dressed. He had yet to make an impression on Roger one way or the other yet, so he offered a hand. "All good things, I hope?" The slightest hint of steel was in his voice, but he was genuinely trying to play nice for the moment. "She's told me quite a lot about you as well." Well, mostly nice. The memory of finding out about his arranged marriage to Daphne was quite memorable and it hadn't left a good impression on Roger.

Turning over to glance at Lucy, he suggested, "Let's head inside and talk. I could go for a drink."

Lucy took a slight step back. She stuffed her hands in the pocket of her coat as she watched the two interact for the first time. She hadn't thought about it until that moment, but for the most part, the two couldn't be any different. Roger was quite the out-going and charming sort of bloke- he always had a joke and he was always smiling. Nikolas was much more reserved, but still just as friendly.

As Roger turned back toward her, a breath she hadn't realized she was holding escaped from her lips.

"Terrible things, actually. There is not one redeeming quality about you- don't know why there'd be a fan club for you," she told him with as straight a face she could muster. It didn't last long before a smile cracked.

She reached toward Nikolas' hand and intertwined her fingers with his. "Brilliant. Let's go. I'm starved, really."

Nikolas followed the lead of the other two into the Three Broomsticks, supposing that this couldn't be too bad. Although he'd never seen Lucy crack this many jokes in such a short period of time - it was definitely the sort of banter you'd see between a brother and sister, though, and it was sort of sweet. She was usually much more quiet, even with her friends, it was nice to see her joking around so readily.

He looked over at Roger as they headed toward a table toward the back, cocking his head curiously. "You have a fan club?"

His tone was light and had a hint of a laugh in it, as he wasn't sure if it had been a joke or not, and didn't want Roger to think he was a moron. But it was plausible. After all, Roger was a Quidditch player, and a lot of the better known ones had their own little groups of fanatics.

Roger had only witnessed the more quiet, shy version of Lucy when they had first started their study sessions. However, before they knew it, she was the person Roger saw these days. Some people weren't lucky as him to witness such a change.

"Didn't you know?" Roger asked, grinning a little. It was a grin with too many teeth, which went to show that Roger hadn't yet passed a favourable judgment on Nikolas, but he wasn't ready to write the younger wizard off completely yet. "Lucy's the president. She keeps things in order for me. Isn't that right, Luce?" Who knew? Maybe there was a real fanclub out there for him, but the one that they always joked about was as real as a three headed dragon.

Settling down at a table in the back, Roger purposely chose a seat that would put him across Nikolas. "So Nikolas. Lucy tells me that you play Quidditch?" It was a safe, mostly neutral topic. He would have to work his way up to the harder questions.

As the trio entered the Three Broomsticks, Lucy's eyes swept the surrounding tables. Only a few eyes turned in their direction and she knew it had more to do with Roger than with Lucy or Nikolas. But she was used to hanging out with a semi-celebrity. Hand in hand with Nikolas, she followed the two toward a table in the back.

"It's quite a responsibility," she nodded her head. "Which usually results in me having to deal with weeping girls and weird gifts. Roger attracts a surely bunch of birds, that's for sure."

She winked playfully at Roger before the three of them settled into a table. She found herself sitting directly in between the two and she found that this was probably the best way for it to be.

"Oh, he's quite good, actually," she said, before turning to look at Nikolas.

"Sounds scary," Nikolas agreed. "Not a responsibility I'd want, though I'm sure you're fully capable."

As they all sat, Nikolas was beginning to feel the lightness of Lucy's mood catch on, and he was glad they'd decided to do this. Her friend didn't seem to hate him, at least, though he could still sense that Roger wasn't entirely at ease. He supposed he couldn't blame him, but still wished he was ignorant of how Roger was probably feeling. And he wondered what Lucy had told Roger about him...did he know about Daphne, for instance?

"Quidditch, yeah," He caught Lucy's compliment and grinned, agreeing internally, but not stupid enough to say it out loud. "I play Chaser. Actually just got the captaincy this year. Malfoy gave it up, for some reason. Was predictably a prat about it, but I'm happy to have the title, really." He paused and studied Roger. "You were...a Chaser, too? I think I remember."

"A Chaser huh? You're right, I was a Chaser back at school," Roger said agreeably. Quidditch was a sort of topic that people bonded over. Maybe it would help ease the feeling of beating this kid's face in, into a feeling that was less violent. "Nothing else like it, right? Seekers might get all the glory, but Chasers make the game I think."

At best, Nikolas would only get a stern talking to before they all parted.

Flagging down one of the girls that worked for Madam Rosmerta to take their drink orders, he offered the bag from the chocolate shop to Lucy. "I know they feed you, but all the same. They really should have more Hogsmeade trips for you lot." He was trying to figure out how exactly to move from away from the pleasantries and to the questions he really wanted to ask, but Roger thought a drink or two first would help with that.

So far, so good. And no beatings. She still remembered Roger's seemingly not-so-idle threat to make Nikolas disappear not so long ago. She had rolled her eyes at the time, but seeing the two together in person made the statement just a bit more possible. But as they were going now, everything seemed to be just fine. And honestly, Lucy couldn't imagine it getting any worse.

Unless, of course, Roger brought up what she told him about the arrangement (something she was prone to calling it now).

"You didn't have to-" Lucy told him, as she reached forward to take the bag. It was becoming a small tradition for them, it seemed. "But I appreciate it all the same, of course. Sasha and I got a little carried away with the last bag the other night."

"Yeah, I don't know that I'd want all the pressure that a Seeker's got," Nikolas agreed, just as the server arrived. He placed his drink order and waited for the others to follow suit.

As she walked back toward the kitchen, he watched the bag pass from Roger to Lucy and recognized it as one of the ones from the sweetshop. Thus far, Nikolas thought this didn't seem so bad. True, they'd only exchanged the usually niceties, but he figured if Roger had more pressing issues to get to, he'd eventually do it one way or another. Nikolas was content to continue avoiding anything more serious until then.

"They usually get new stock in for Spring around this time of year, don't they?" he observed conversationally. "Did you even have the strawberry-filled chocolate eggs?"

"I think," Roger said, his tone still light as ever, "We could be talking about more important things rather than strawberry-filled chocolates." It wasn't a suggestion either, but he didn't immediately start into threats.

Though these threats were, rather, promises.

"I hear you come from a long line of Purebloods. I'm quite curious about what the other side has to say about these decrees as of late. Have any thoughts you'd like to share?" Roger asked, as if they were talking about the weather. Their drinks arrived quickly and Roger took his with a smile, though he had yet to raise it to his lips.

And suddenly, in a matter of moments, the conversation took a turn. Lucy looked down at the pint glass of butterbeer sitting in front of her. Her eyes were focused on the condensation sticking to the glass as she chewed on the bottom of her lip. She couldn't deny she hadn't expected this subject matter to be brought up.

At the same time, she wasn't sure what she could say, either. She found herself in a tricky position. If she said something in defense of Nikolas, she could have both Roger and Nikolas miffed with her. Roger, for defending Nikolas and perhaps Nikolas wouldn't be too keen with her talking for him.

So, she stole a look toward Nikolas, an apologetic look flickering across her face before she busied herself with her butterbeer.

Roger's question had genuinely taken Nikolas off guard. It was a good thing the drinks hadn't arrived before then, or else there was the distinct possibility he'd have choked on his. Part of him couldn't believe someone would just launch into a question like that with no provocation. Roger had probably been itching to bring this up, but Nikolas was sure it could have been more artfully done.

Though he tried to keep his expression as neutral as Roger had his, it was easy to see that Nikolas was nettled. He did at least manage to keep an edge out of his voice. A few moments passed between his drink arriving and him looking pointedly over at Roger - he could feel Lucy's eyes on him and was sure she was probably even more uncomfortable than he was.

"Yeah, my family's bloodlines are fairly...old, and pure," Nikolas answered. He hadn't been sure what else to say, but now he thought there wasn't much use in trying to fabricate anything in regards to his family's views. His brow creased, and he realized that his irritation had grown. "And I'm sure I can't speak for the entirety of the 'other side', but I can assure you that even my family finds them to be a bit too extreme for their tastes."

It hadn't been in his intention to lure Nikolas into what felt like safe conversation before springing hard questions like that on him. It just happened that way and he wasn't all that concerned with being artful about it.

The turn in conversation was swift and unexpected, but Roger easily moved with the change. If this had been about anyone but Lucy, he might have taken his time and gotten to know Nikolas a little better. But he cared about the younger Ravenclaw too much to make sure Nikolas didn't feel uncomfortable with his line of questioning.

As a matter of fact, the more uncomfortable he was, the better. "They find them extreme, yet, they don't want you marrying outside of the good ol' old and pure, right?" Roger held Nikolas' gaze for a moment, before shooting Lucy an apologetic look. He fully knew that she had told him about that in confidence.

He'd beg for forgiveness later.

In the back of Lucy's mind, she'd had an inkling that the lunch would result in some sort of awkward situation. She had become prone to putting herself in such events and had become fairly used to their occurrence. However, she'd never expected Roger to come out with it, as he did. She pursed her lips as her hands clutched at the pint glass in front of her.

She looked toward Nikolas, trying to figure out the best way to diffuse the situation. But as Roger spoke again, Lucy's eyes bulged slightly.

A hot sensation crept up the back of her neck. No doubt, she was as pink as could be as Roger divulged what she had told him about the arrangement.

"Roger-" she began, but then cut herself off. There was no use yelling at him just then. Instead, she looked to him with a rather abashed look. "You don't really have to do this.."

Marriage, really? Last he had checked, he and Lucy had barely started going out - they weren't exactly looking for rings and a honeymoon location. In fact, though it wasn't something he dwelt on, it still seemed that he would be marrying Daphne in that far off time two years from now. Weird, unfortunate, but true.

Instead of saying this, though, Nikolas gave Roger a withering look. It was clear that he was beyond just being uncomfortable. He was verging on annoyed, and didn't look at Lucy when she began to speak to Roger.

He cut in, "It may not seem that way to you, but marrying outside of the bloodline and having Muggleborns subjected to dubious laws and arrested on trumped up charges are hardly the same thing."

Yes, perhaps they stemmed from a similar belief that Muggleborns were in some way not as worthy as Purebloods, but Nikolas hardly thought the first was as ridiculous as the second.

"I do, Luce," he said, not looking at her because he knew that if he saw how embarrassed she was, he would have quit it. But he was determined to find out...to find out...well, he wasn't entirely sure what he wanted to find out about Nikolas. Ultimately, Roger wanted to know if Nikolas would ever put Lucy in harm's way or hurt her in the end. If she was as serious about this bloke as Roger thought she might have been, then he wanted to be sure there was nothing to worry about.

It was hard to be overprotective when he wasn't living under the same roof as her, but it was possible.

Cocking an eyebrow, Roger met Nikolas' look straight on without a flinch. "They stem from the same kind of thinking. If you were in my shoes, Vasiey, you'd see where I was coming from. I don't want to be worrying about Lucy and, forgive me for saying so, but most Slytherins I've met come from the same kind of intolerant household that Malfoys have crawled out from."
