Dean felt a bit oddly disconnected from his mates of late. it was a bit of his own fault. He'd been preoccupied. But with Harry and Ron gone, it seemed like he, Finnigan and Longbottom ought to be spending more time together, not less. That didn't seem to be the case though.

This weekend though, Dean was determined to chuck everything, drag Seamus away from whatever the hell it was he'd been doing lately, and go get a butterbeer or a pint and do something that wasn't hanging about the school, sketching or keeping an eye out for a Greengrass he shouldn't be snogging in the first place, or worrying over things he couldn't do anything about from here, anyway.

He was up early, and skipped breakfast, figuring they could get something to eat in Hogsmeade later. He stayed quiet enough that he hopefully wouldn't wake Neville, but went over to Seamus' bed and gave him a none-too-gentle poke to wake up. "Out of bed, Finnigan," he ordered, quiet but obnoxious still.

Seamus felt bad that he hadn't been able to spend a lot of time with Dean lately. Between his studies, taking care of Fang, and the lessons for his new found animal-ness, he was tired.

So even though it was Hogsmeade weekend and looked like it was going to be pretty decent outside, Seamus didn't have any intentions of leaving his bed. He just wanted to sleep.

Until he felt a poke and Dean's quiet yet forceful voice. "Urgh. But why? Can't we just sleep all day?" he asked in a whiny voice, pulling the covers over his head.

"No. We're going out. Together. Since I've barely seen you out of class, and you've barely seen me, and I think you're just wanting to lie about in bed because you're depressed over missing me. So I'm going to make you feel better. And make you buy me a drink because I've barely got a knut on hand," Dean told him cheerfully, though still quiet.

He tugged the covers off Seamus' face and kicked the mattress to make it shudder. "Up. Finnigan. Or I'm going for ice water," Dean threatened him. "You're getting right dull you know - all you do is skeeve off, or sleep."

Groaning when the covers weren't around him anymore, Seamus pushed himself off of the bed. Dean did have a point - he was becoming dull lately. He wished that he could tell Dean everything that was going on, but he knew that it would turn into a bad, bad thing if anyone outside the group knew.

So, he crawled off the bed and gave a half smile. "Alright alright I'm up. Let me put on something more presentable then my flannels and grab some money. Fang is probably going to have to come with us though, otherwise he's not getting fed today."

Digging through his clothes, he found a pair of khaki slacks and a white tshirt, tossing on his Irish National Team sweatshirt over his head. "Where are we going anyway? Is there some big plan or are we just going with the flow?"

"Fang can tag along, if he'll be all right waiting outside if we go in anywhere?" Fang had hung about the school and Hogsmeade often enough that Dean was fairly sure the big dog knew his way around and would just wander back home if he got bored anywhere.

Dean dropped down on his own bunk to wait as Seamus got dressed. He shrugged. "I don't know. Town? Get a drink, food, something? I just figured we'd get away from the castle for a bit. We could pop off somewhere else, I suppose." Which would be exceedingly stupid for Dean, given his muggleborn status. But he was in a reckless sort of mood, anyway. "If you've got an idea, we can go with it."

"Aye he'll be fine. He knows his way home, but I think he's been around enough now that he'll wait for me wherever I am."

At that moment Fang woke up and looked up at Seamus, as if he knew that they were talking about them. He motioned to the door and slapped his leg two times to signal not only to Dean that he was ready to go, but to Fang that they were leaving.

"Food and drink sounds good. But we should probably stay within Hogsmeade. Last thing I want is for you to land somewhere and have someone see you and snitch you out," Seamus told him. Which was the truth - Dean was vulnerable right now, and he didn't want his best friend to get snatched up.

Dean made a face. He was easy going, for a Gryffindor, but he was a teenage boy, and he didn't especially like when there were things he was getting told he couldn't or shouldn't do. "Yeah, fine," he agreed though.

He grabbed up his coat and shrugged it on as he let all three of them out of the dorm, heading down to the common room and out the portrait, scratching behind Fang's ears as the dog knocked into his leg while they walked. "So what then? Go eat in town, or you want to get breakfast here first, then go?" he asked Seamus, shooting the other boy a look and grinning. "Your head looks like you got struck by an angry lightning bolt."

"It's for your safety, mate. Don't know what I'd do without you here," he told Dean when he saw that he was slightly annoyed with his answer.

Seamus gave Fang a few pats on his back as he walked past the two of them, leading the pack down the stairs. Looking up at his hair, which he couldn't see, he laughed and tried to flatten it down. "That's what happens when you wake me up. Growl," he joked. "Going into town sounds good. It'll be nice to get some food that's not made by elves. Not that they don't make bad food. But I want something different."

"Probably not notice for a week, much as we've seen of each other lately," Dean pointed out with a grin and an elbow to the side.

"Town it is," he agreed. "And I had to wake you up, or you'd have just slept the day away like a lazy ponce, and then buggered off somewhere when you woke up." Them not seeing much of each other was just as much Dean's fault as Seamus'. But Dean KNEW where he'd been. Seamus he hadn't a clue, and he was curious. He still thought that there must be a girl or something he was nipping off with.

"I'd still notice," he told Dean, elbowing him back.

Seamus shrugged his shoulders has they walked through the hallways to the gates that led them outside for the walk to Hogsmeade. "I probably would've just slept, to be honest. I really am sorry I haven't been around lately. Just got a lot on my plate."

It was killing him inside. Silently Seamus wondered if he did let slip what was going on, if it was something that Dean would absolutely keep to himself. Or if he should keep on lying and give him the Patronus help excuse. He hated lying to Dean, but so much was relying on the secrecy of the animagi, and how much trouble they could all get in.

Seamus was pretty sure he was going to go mad by the end of it all.

Dean gave him a curious look. "My fault just as much as yours, mate. And if you're really that tired, then I can let you go back to bed." He studied Seamus' profile for a second and then headed down the stairs toward the front castle entrance. "So what's got your plate so full? Not that we're not all a bit busy, but I wouldn't call myself all that overwhelmed." Most of his distraction had been of his own doing, really.

The Patronus thing was possible, he supposed. It just seemed a bit off to him.

He caught the banister as the stairs started to move, rolling his eyes and waiting for them to settle back into place before starting down again.

"Nah, I do want to go. But if it was a non Hogsmeade weekend, my arse would still be in bed," he said, shooting him half a smile.

Once they arrived at the entrance, Seamus pushed open the door and saw Fang bolt out into the sunlight. "Apparently he's excited to get out," he laughed.

"I told you about my extra Patronus lessons, right?" he asked Dean, his voice a little lower as some third years ran past them. "The Headmistress is taking it pretty seriously, wanting to make sure I can do it well in case it's ever needed." Yep, he was going to stick with that lie. Which, it wasn't a complete lie, because she really was helping him. Just, not for the reasons he told Dean.

"Your arse can sleep in tomorrow," Dean promised with a snort.

He watched Fang dash out, shoving his hands in the pockets of his coat against the chill in the air as they walked out. "Guess so. He gets cooped up inside a bit more now that he's staying with us, probably." Not that Seamus didn't take care of him and get him out often enough, but Dean was pretty sure Hagrid would just open the door to his hut and let the dog loose most of the time, and with Fang in the castle, they had to take him out less often, even if some of their fellow Gryffindors and D.A. were more than happy to help out sometimes.

Dean gave him another look, but then nodded. "Yeah, you told me. Guess it's for the best that we all know. I thought you'd mostly sussed it out, though. Back when we were all learning."

Seamus nodded and chuckled a bit. "Hopefully now that it's getting nicer I can take him out more. I mean, I got him out as much as I could, but it was bloody cold out. This is slightly pleasant compared to a few weeks ago." Regardless of this, the chill morning air did hit him fast, so he slid his hands into the pouch on his sweatshirt.

"I always had some issues with it," he muttered. "I just didn't want everyone knowing I was having such a problem. But the Headmistress really helped me get what I was doing wrong."

Which she did help with that. Seamus wondered if he was as vague as possible with Dean if he would be satisfied with that. He wasn't going to bring it up, though; he wanted to see what the day would bring them.

Merlin, if he was going crazy just keeping it from his best friend, then Sam had to have been going crazy keeping it from Ginny.

"Yeah, I know," Dean answered. "Be a bit easier to fly now that it's getting warmer too. No more freezing tears to your face when your eyes water." Which was a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much, during their coldest matches, anyway.

Dean frowned. "Yeah, but I'm not everyone." If Seamus had a problem with i, Dean would have though he'd have heard about it back then, when the problem first popped up.

He knew Seamus well, and something wasn't adding up. Dean grunted a little, but let it go with a slightly irritated shrug of broad shoulders. "Yeah, all right," he gave in. "So you've got it down now, though? You said she helped you work it through?"

Seamus made a face. "That has to be painful. At least to blink anyway, with frozen tears in the way." In a way Seamus was glad that he didn't have to worry about flying all the time. He enjoyed it when he had to, but there was a lot of stress on the shoulders of the Quidditch players. He'd rather watch.

"Aye, pretty much. I think she's pretty satisfied with my progress." But it wasn't going to explain why he was going to be absent in the near future. He could tell by Deans mannerisms that he wasn't buying it. There had to be a way Seamus could explain it without actually saying "I'm illegally training to turn into an animal."

So as they walked down the path, Seamus found the first giant tree they could duck behind, made sure that no one - especially anyone from the group or, heaven forbid, McGonagall - saw him pull Dean behind it.

"Okay look. Have you ever had a secret that was so important that you couldn't tell anyone? Not your family, your friends, girlfriends, and especially your best friends? Not because you didn't want to, but because it could jeopardize the safety of everyone around you?"

Because that wasn't vague at all, Finnigan...

Dean had been glad of he pressure and the time required to be on the team, really, since it had distracted him from other worries and issues. And he did just love to play. There were better fliers and players out there, but he did his bet and enjoyed it. he was just glad it'd never been a real problem between him and Seamus when he flew for the House and Seamus didn't.

Of course, that didn't mean Dean didn't rub it in his face now and then. Particularly when he was ducking questions, Dean was pretty sure.

"Hey!" The stealth of Seamus' hiding them behind a try was likely ruined by the fact that Dean yelled in surprise. Luckily, no one seemed to be nearby, and he blinked at Seamus, starting to ask what the hell he was doing when Seamus started to babble.

He frowned. "No. . ." The biggest secrets he had were the D.A., and Daphne - both of which his mates, or Seamus at least, knew about. He cocked his head. "It's that important, that you can't tell me? Really?" He was a little hurt, and curious as hell. But he trusted Seamus, so if he said that. . . well, it had to be something that mattered.

Seamus rubbed his face in his hands and let out a low groan, not wanting to draw attention to them. "You have no idea how bad I want to tell you. But I can't. Not only for my safety, but for the handful of people involved. All I can tell you is that it's really important and that while it could be a great help to everything that's going on out there," he said, waving his hand around, motioning that he was talking about the war, "it could also get us in trouble if anyone found out what we're doing. To the point that we could get sent to Azkaban."

Taking a deep breath, he looked straight into Dean's eyes - as much as he could anyway, since his mate was miles taller than him now - to show him he was being completely serious. "It's big. Huge. And it involves my Patronus lessons. But that's as much as I can tell you. I'm doing it for you though. You and all the other muggleborns who are getting sucked up into this bloody fucking war. You mainly though. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you to this shite. So just please...please trust me when I tell you that I honestly can not tell you what's going on, but the moment that I feel it's safe enough, I'll tell you everything."

He took another deep breath. Seamus hoped that it all made sense, and he didn't actually tell Dean anything other than the Patronus bit. Everyone's identities were still safe.

Dean listened, frown deepening. Seamus couldn't tell him. He believed that, and he trusted his friend enough to not push that part anymore, once he'd been told. . .

But doing it for him? Sod that. If it was that big, and could get him in that much trouble, and Seamus was doing it for HIM, he could cut it right the hell you. Dean didn't want him running about getting up to secret shite on his behalf. "I'm not sucked into a war. I joined the D.A. Same as you. It's not like I was daft and don't know what's going on. And if you're doing it for me, then sod off. I don't want you sticking your nose in something that could get sent off to Azkaban for me. You don't have to tell me what it is, but if that's your reason, then cut it right the hell out."

There was going to be no easy way around this. Why did they both have to be so stubborn?

"It's too late. I'm too far into it. If I back out now..." Seamus didn't want to think about the fact that McGonagall would have to obliviate them because of what they knew. But he also understood that she wouldn't have a choice in the matter. "If I back out now, I'd have to be obliviated. Because the information that we know and the people involved...it's too big for us to just walk around with that kind of information."

Seamus sighed, running his hands through the hair that he finally managed to matte down. "I know that you're more than aware of the situation you're in. That we're both in. But...say we leave, this war is still going on, and we're caught in some type of battle. You get hurt and can't defend yourself. What I'm doing...it could save your life. If I'm standing by my best friend in a battle and have the option of taking this...thing...and using it to safe your life, then it's bloody well worth the possible trip to Azkaban."

Just as he was about to throw his hands in the air of it all and head back to the castle, Fang came running up to them. Seamus knelt down and scratched the pup behind his ears, and in turn got a face full of Fang-tongue, which made him laugh a bit. He was frustrated, upset, and just wanted Dean to understand.

He was so frustrated that he started to cry without even realizing it. Seamus looked up, blinking away tears. "I'm becoming an Animagus." He said it so quietly that he wasn't sure if it actually came out, but once he realized it did, his eyes grew large. "McGonagall is going to kill me.

Dean was scowling, arms crossing over his chest. "Not to me." Not that he wanted to die. But he didn't want Seamus doing anything that could get him tossed into Azkaban on the off chance he might be able to save Dean in some future battle that might or might not happen.

Fang running up brought Dean's eyes away from Seamus' face to look at the dog. When Seamus started to talk again, Dean looked at him. . . and abruptly felt like a complete git when he saw the tears his friend was blinking away.

Bloody hell.

Dean knelt down on Fang's other side, petting the dog and shaking his head. "Seamus. . . god, you're a git. You didn't have to tell me." Not that Dean hadn't been pushing for it, but he felt like a heel, now. "That's what Mcgonagall's teaching you?" He shook his head, smiling a little. "All right. . . well you're daft, and lucky I don't kick your arse. . . but it's a bit brilliant, isn't it?" Even if Dean wondered why it was Seamus she was teaching. Not that he wasn't capable- but there was a school full of people. He wondered why Seamus was the one picked.

Seamus ruffled Fang's head a bit then gave him a pat on his back. "Go on, boy. We'll catch up in a second." Fang gave him a sideways glance then took back off down the trail, running circles around a group of students till they stopped to pet him.

"I was trying so hard not to," he said, wiping the tears away on the back of his sleeve. "But it was so hard trying to make you understand what was going on without you completely hating me. It was going that route. You're a stubborn git, you know that right?"

He chuckled, nodding his head, then he shrugged his shoulders. "It is. It's going to be completely brilliant once we're done. But you have to promise me, on your life, that this stays between us. You can't tell anyone...not the DA, your family, not even Daphne. Merlin, especially not Daphne. There's too much at risk if we're found out. We're not exactly doing it with the Ministry's blessing. And I know what you're thinking...why me?" Because honestly, he was still wondering the same thing.

"We're all thinking that. The group of us are in no way the people you would think would be behind something like this. But we all know the risks and we're all willing to sacrifice ourselves to help out the cause."

Dean watched Fang run off, mostly averting his gaze while Seamus wiped at his eyes, so he could pretend he hadn't noticed. It seemed like the sort of thing he should do. When Seamus was done, Dean looked back and snorted. "I'd have gotten brassed, but I wasn't going to hate you. You're my best mate, can't really think of anything you can do to make me hate you, offhand. I mean thump you, yeah, but not hate you."

Dean straightened again, standing and offering Seamus a hand up to do the same, since Fang was off flirting with other students and they didn't have him there to pet as a distraction. "Daphne and me aren't at the confessing deep secrets stage. Doubt we ever really will be. But I wouldn't tell her something like this. You know that," Dean promised.

He looked a little sheepish over being caught out wondering why Seamus had been picked. "It's not that I don't think you could do it. Just that I didn't think you or me would be first choice, yeah? But she must think you'll be good at it." Dean itched to know who else was learning, but he refrained from asking. Barely.
