Who: Hermione and Ron
What: Birthday present giving, Cheering up
Where: Shell Cottage Kitchen
When: After dinner
Rating/Warning: TBA

Hermione watched Ron during dinner. She'd seen him taking an owl - which was dangerous, and she'd meant to scold him but then she'd helped with dinner and it had been nice to be able to do some magic with the wand that Bill had brought her. Besides, it was still probably about his birthday, and Bill and Fleur getting a few owls probably wasn't too out of the ordinary, so she didn't really want to say much about it.

She felt stupid about the present she'd made him, but it was the best she could do, really.

After everyone had left to their rooms or to other things, she found herself still sitting next to him at the table in the cottage's small kitchen, looking at him carefully and wondering if she should ask. "You got an owl earlier?" She finally decided on.

"Yeah, I did." Ron dove into his pocket to produce a small bottle, with a growing grin. "From Fred - one for you. Don't worry, I've already tried it. It won't make your hair fall out or anything." Although it had been a little stronger than he'd expected. That was all for the best, though; even though he was suddenly surrounded by family and his friends were, for the moment, not about to be murdered, it was hard to forget that there wasn't much else to be cheerful about. "- If you wan't, anyway. Just something to cheer up with." He set the bottle in front of her, before crossing his arms on the table and slouching forward a little. It was working in record time, too.

Hermione eyed the bottle suspiciously, and then after a moment picked it up. "What is it?" She asked, but then uncorked it and sniffed it instead of letting him answer. The smell was unmistakable.

"Cheering potions?" She wasn't sure they should be turning to potions to make themselves feel better, really. Then again, it wouldn't hurt just once, would it? After all they'd gone through, didn't they deserve to be cheerful for one night?

"Just a little. - It's not like we've got anything we have to do, is it?" He wanted her to take it - she should be allowed to have a little fun, while she could. When would they have this sort of respite again? "Come on." He pushed her shoulder lightly. "It's my birthday. You have to."

She wanted to say that she didn't have to do anything, just to be contrary, but it was his birthday, and she'd already been leaning toward taking it. She wanted something to help her get over this funk, they'd gotten away from Death Eaters and she was still grousing over her wand... Worrying over how uncoordinated she felt with the replacement Bill had brought her.

She uncorked the bottle, and then rolled her eyes disapproving at him, but drank it anyway.

The familiar, discouraging expression did nothing to dampen his mood - only seemed to lighten it, in fact. And he thought that was how he should have felt, really, after narrowly escaping death or whatever it was that had awaited them and arriving here, of all places. He felt almost like he was at home.

"Not bad, right?" he reached over to take the bottle from her hand once she had finished her dose. "Those two really do deliver, sometimes. They're the ones who know how to have fun, I suppose." Even if it seemed to be at other people's expense a little too often. - It was hard to mind very much, just now.

"They didn't brew it themselves, did they?" Her potion hadn't kicked in quite yet, but Hermione could feel the warmth of it, and Ron looked... giddy? She was wondering just how strong the twins would make a cheering potion, if they'd brewed them. If you didn't crush the seeds the right way...

Oh, but it was quick working. A moment later, and Hermione found herself smiling, without really much reason to be.

"Not a clue. If they had, I reckon we'd be turning purple, or something." Not that he'd have cared (or, more likely than not, noticed) - so long as it worked, he wasn't going to complain one bit. He felt fantastic, and she looked like she was heading in the same direction. He leaned in a bit closer, as though inspecting her face. "And you still look quite like yourself, so I think all's well." His smile had spread into something that looked slightly doltish, by now.

"Well, if I do turn purple it will be your fault," Hermione answered, but she felt the sudden, unstoppable need to giggle, which she never did, and she felt it welling up and laughed instead, shaking her head, her hand finding his arm for no good reason at all.

"Will not. You knew where it came from when you drank it. Purpleness is one of the standard risks." He grinned down to where her hand had landed on his arm, and leaned into it just slightly (only a little afraid that if he moved too suddenly, he'd fall out of his chair). "So where's my present, eh? I'm surprised you even remembered - I pretty much forgot."

Hermione had to think very hard for a moment, which was a little unsettling, to remember what present she'd actually gotten him, and then she blushed and looked down at her lap. "It's a bit of a rubbish present, actually..." She admitted, but before he could answer that she laughed - it was embarrassingly close to a giggle - and jumped up to go and get it.

A few moments later she was back with something held behind her back.

It couldn't possibly be rubbish, he thought, as he watched her leave. He didn't know what she could actually have found - even the thought of being presented with a rodent a la Luna wasn't quite enough to lift the giddy haze - but he knew it wouldn't matter. He stood up when she returned and held out his hands, the same stupid grin plastered across his face. Any efforts to tame it had been long abandoned. "Alright, then - no need to be hiding anything, I know no one's had any time to do wrapping."

Hermione rolled her eyes, but she found too that it made her a little dizzy and tickled somehow, which was ridiculous but made her laugh again. "No, but close your eyes." Because that was what someone was meant to do when getting a gift.

"Hermione," he very nearly whined, even as he was squeezing his eyes shut - which threatened to ruin his balance. The thought that the twins had sent him more than just a cheering potion went through his mind not for the first time. "Hurry then, before I fall over and bash my head on the table." He couldn't do that, because then everyone would come in here, and that ... would be bad. Yes.

Oh. Hermione laughed, but that was actually serious, and she took his hand and tugged him into the abandoned living room instead of giving him the gift. "Sit down, then." She shoved a little too hard and sent him tumbling down onto the sofa, laughing all the time, then sat beside him and sat the envelope in his lap.

Inside was a coupon she'd made herself - Good for one real present when Voldemort was dead.

Ron dutifully kept his eyes closed, even as he was almost definitely about to crash to the floor. He let out a loud laugh when he landed instead on the couch, and grabbed for Hermione's arm to pull her along with him - but she was already there. He opened his eyes and snatched up the paper, pulling it closer than he really needed to. His smile couldn't possibly have grown any more.

"That's fantastic," he laughed, holding it up to the light as though checking for authenticity. He threw his arm around her shoulders. "Don't think I'm going to forget, either - first thing, I'll be looking for it. The minute that bastard hits the ground, you can bet I'll have an open palm."

Hermione didn't think it was as fantastic as all of that, but the fact that he seemed to like it, that he didn't look disappointed, made her grin for some reason literally from ear to ear, and she was sitting far closer to him than she would have if she hadn't been so happy. It couldn't all be the potion, could it.

"It isn't a real present, but it will be. Then." When the bastard hit the ground, she giggled again at the description - but, somehow, that didn't seem so impossible right now.
