Characters: Millicent and Lucy
Setting: Saturday afternoon, heading outside for a walk
Summary: The two ladies Nikolas actually chose to have in his life decide they should get to know each other.
Rating: I'm going to say PG to err on the safe side, as Millicent is... well, Millicent, and thus might swear.

Well, this was going to be interesting. It was probably about time, anyway. Millicent checked her watch, then looked up again to keep an eye out for Lucy. To be fair, yes, they'd technically met before, in McGonagall's sessions mostly. But they'd never really talked - she couldn't say she really knew much at all about the Ravenclaw - and she figured that if they were going to be connected through Nik anyway, they may as well get to know each other on their terms.

Besides, when was the last time Millicent had spent any decent amount of time with another girl? It would be nice.

Running one hand through her hair to get it out of her face, she looked around again. There she was! She waved at Lucy to get her attention.

It had been a weird weekend. Mostly due to the fact that a girl she'd never even met before had such an influence over her current state of mind. Stuffing her hands in the pockets of her coat, the soles of her trainers squeaked slightly against the marble floors of the corridor. She half wondered what was going to happen next - what this relationship between Daphne and Nikolas meant and what it meant for her. As she came closer to where she had told Milicent she would meet her, she grew slightly curious as to how this was going to pan out as well.

She returned the wave once her sights set upon the older girl, a friendly smile spreading across her lips. Although in the past Milicent had seemed rather intimidating, it was impossible for Lucy to make judgments based on that alone.

"I hope you weren't waiting too long," Lucy said, an apologetic tinge to her voice. "I've not quite been myself today. Running a little behind."

"Oh, I wondered how long you'd be, but I kept myself occupied," Millicent nodded seriously, before grinning. "No, only joking, I haven't been here too long at all myself. I was actually surprised you weren't here before me." She chuckled and put her hands in her pockets. "It's not hard to get distracted or be out of sorts, so it's no problem. I've got a fourth-year tending my sick cat right now, actually, and I need to figure out whether it would make more sense to ask Madam Pomfrey or Professor Weasley about it."

Gesturing Lucy to follow, Millicent headed outside. "Sorry to start out on such a low note," she frowned. "Anyway..." Trailing off, she laughed nervously. "Hell, it's been ages since I've done this. Where do we start?"

Lucy found herself smiling once Milicent began to talk. If she had been nervous before, the older girl had already made it quite easy to feel comfortable. She nodded her head as a more solemn look flickered across her face. The idea of sick animals was always one Lucy found quite saddening. But she also put a lot of her stock into the animals she had discovered upon her entrance into the wizarding world.

"It's not a bother, really," Lucy told her, waving her hand at the apology. "I think it would be best to take the matter to Professor Weasley. Even though Madam Pomfrey is nothing short of amazing, I don't know if she knows much about animals."

Hagrid had always been their game keeper in the past but now she wasn't sure if Professor Weasley had taken over that position on top of Care of Magical Creatures professor as well. She shrugged her shoulders.

"I'm not sure where we start," she added then, smiling slightly. "I'm not so good at this."

"Thanks for that," Millicent nodded with a grateful half-smile. "Makes sense. S'pose I'm just not used to, er, not being able to handle Buster myself, so pardon if my head's screwed on wrong."

Well, what a way to start off. Millicent had almost never had to worry about going out of her way to know people before. Ever since she was a child, her acquaintances were always picked out for her, and on top of that she generally got on better with the boys, who were notorious for making friends through shared activities rather than talking and sharing and whatever.

Needless to say, this year was quickly making Millicent aware how miserable she was at this.

"Hmm." She broke the silence again. Best to start out with commonalities. The what's-your-favourite brand of small talk could wait a bit. "So how'd you and Nik meet anyway?"

Perhaps it was having grown up with an older brother or maybe it was easy to be quiet around blokes in the common room, but Lucy counted some of her closest friends boys. The only girls she really got on well with were Luna and Branwen. She never really made girl friends back in London. She looked toward Milicent, nodding her head in understanding.

"Animals are important," she said. "Pets, especially. They're a part of the family in my mind."

Which was true. It didn't help that she had a small fascination with magical creatures and animals alike. She had thought she'd be a vet before she learned she was a witch.

"Oh," Lucy rubbed at the back of her ear. Nikolas. "Well, we sort of met mostly in and out of class. We'd be partnered up a few times. And then we just got to spending more time together. He and I studied quiet often."

She smiled. "And we really studied, I promise."

Millicent nodded. "That's how I've always seen it too. Then again, there's times when Buster's the only one who'll put up with me." Shaking her head, she waved it off, and couldn't help but grin at Lucy's defense. "I believe you were only studying, don't worry. I mostly got to know him on the pitch myself - instigated a sort of debate among the team about letting girls on, hah."

Though it was nicer outside than it had been recently, it still wasn't anything she'd call warm, and she crossed her arms to keep in some of the heat. "Well, apparently, we're both bad at this, so maybe we just... start asking questions about each other, learn a bit, and if something sparks conversation we go with it?" she shrugged. "Go on, you next."

"I always thought it was a bit silly," Lucy said, a brief sidelong glance at Milicent. "Not having girls on the team, i mean. Quidditch can't just be a bloke's game."

She laughed then, realizing that the pair of them might be a bit too socially awkward to start this off right. She raked a hand through her hair, gathering the waves to one side of her neck.

"Alright, what would you like to do after completing Hogwarts?"

"Well, clearly it isn't," Millicent agreed, shrugging again. "Slytherin's just woefully behind the times."

She crossed her fingers in the absence of wood to knock on (despite their being outside), hoping their mutual failure at socialization didn't keep them from having a decent conversation anyway. It was going well so far, and she meant to keep it that way. "I thought about teaching history, but hell if Binns'll ever agree to leave. But I think it's important, and even interesting with the right teacher. Anyway, it's put best to use changing things anyway, so I'd like to take up a Ministry post, maybe in international magical cooperation." Biting back a smile, she added, "You may very well see me as Minister someday. I know, bit of a lofty goal, but I'm not a Slytherin for nothing.

"And how about you?"

Lucy nodded her head, again, but did not bother to share her sentiments on the Slytherin house. As of late, she hadn't thought one thing or another about the students grouped into Slytherin. Now, as she realized Nikolas' and Greengrass' families were a shining example of Slytherin, she felt herself a bit confused toward the house as a whole. As Milicent talked, Lucy found that she was certainly not the girl the rest of the school thought she was.

And that made Lucy smile.

"I think that all sounds brilliant. It might be best to see Binn's shove off, let him settle- or, well, something. Whatever it is ghosts do..." She laughed in spite of the idea. "And I think that would be fascinating, working in areas like that."

She paused as she thought about Milicent's answer in return.

"Something with magical creatures. Anything, really. I think I want to spend some time traveling when I finish here, maybe work in Romania."
