Harding saluted her. “That’s what I’m here for.” He resisted the urge to add a ‘m’lady’. Harding had no idea why that was even an urge right then. She brought the knight out in him. What could he say?
“Ohhh.” His head tipped in a nod of enlightenment at the clarification. Harding was at least semi-familiar with those gods. As far as workout videos and ESPN and music went, anyway. He could see her point though, as she continued to explain. “Well that’s rude,” Harding quipped.
Harding could definitely understand needing a change of scenery. Before he’d settled back home, Harding had traveled all over and he’d get fatigued after staying in the same place for too long. Fatigued and well...in too much trouble, but needing a change of scenery was definitely the most tactful way to put it. He exhaled with empathy and a light headshake. “I know how that goes. You’ll be happy to know this place is nothing like the big city.” She’d chosen well.
“He does!” Harding said to answer her question about Jackson. “My big brother is this big shot novelist. He can just buy coffee shops on a whim and then run them. It’s awesome. You’ll have to check it out. I own a couple gyms. Those are just my businesses. Small smoothie place.” Harding was happy to recommend all the Reynold family businesses. He nodded when she asked if he’d been to New York. “I lived there for awhile. Less than a year, but long enough to know my way around the city.”
She looked a little disappointed when he explained the Midas thing. Harding was a little disappointed that he couldn’t high five her too, and was happy to switch the topic to the couch. He smiled, but would save his comment for when he saw the furniture in question. “I like the vibe here too. It’s a little more chill. And I did! Moved away after high school, but you could definitely call me a local. Feel free to come at me with any questions.”
Climbing into the truck after her, Harding surveyed the sofa. “On a couch scale, I think I’d rate it highly.” Harding spoke with savvy confidence and authority. He had, after all, been sitting on couches for many years. He nodded and when she was in position, hefted his side of it. The trick was going to be the apartment door.
