A number of Seth’s relatives were fretting about Abbie’s overall condition. Another group was occupied discussing her baby out of wedlock with the fiance she’d run away from. Either way, nourishment was far from everyone’s minds, and most of them hadn’t eaten since the night before. They needed food. If Seth brought food for them, he’d be helping more than he would just sitting in the waiting room.
Even with all of the different feelings and thoughts that Seth couldn’t give words getting tangled as they all fought for dominance, there was a moment where Seth was struck by how great Alex was. His wife was a genius.
Normally, Seth might not have liked some of his relatives seeing Alex in a hoodie and jeans, but under these circumstances, wardrobes were the furthest thing from his mind. Cassie could have brought her a grass skirt and Seth wouldn’t have made a comment. Seth wanted to be at the hospital as badly as he wanted to be useful. The warring desires kept his pace from quickening to the elevator. He walked at an even tempo, keeping step with Alex on the way.
When the doors to the elevator closed, Seth had his phone out. He looked up for a second when Alex addressed him, but his attention was very much still on the phone. “Hold on….I’m just pulling up everyone’s food profiles….”
Seth ordered food for a lot of company and family events. Eventually, he’d worked with someone to develop an app that kept track of food preferences and helped Seth make personalized mass orders. How everyone liked their coffee. What vegetables and condiments they’d eat on a hamburger. Foods they loved and foods they hated. It was being mindful of the little details that really got you ahead.
“I’m thinking the sandwich place,” Seth said. “They’re usually pretty fast.” A lot of company meetings had to be catered by them. While Seth worked on getting the order ready, he was occupied for the rest of the elevator ride. He didn’t address Alex again until after a moment of quiet in the car.
“Thanks, by the way,” Seth said. “For being so great.” He knew this wasn’t Alex’s first choice for how she spent her morning. Seth appreciated her being there.
