Her eyes found Jesse again and she frowned. It wasn't so much at him as it was a reaction to the way he sounded. "What do you want to do?"
Since she was already sitting in the corner with her legs pulled up, there wasn't much more room on the couch that she could leave for Jesse. He wouldn't be able to fully lie down, but certainly there was enough room for him to spread out more, Elise figured. But Jesse only sat down next to her. He was fighting the exhaustion, she could see it. She just...didn't know why. The shadows beneath his eyes seemed to be deepening by the second. "I can see how that might be the case." It didn't surprise her that the facade his sister showed the public wasn't the real Shanna. She just wasn't so sure which one was better. On the other hand, she was pretty sure she wouldn't like either one.
In the grand scheme of things, Elise also figured Jesse's sister wasn't much of a concern to her. Right here, in this moment when she finally had Lily in her arms again, Shanna mattered not at all. "You know you need to sleep." The hint of censure in her tone was quiet. She wasn't worried about Jesse, she told herself, but he looked like hell. That meant he'd been pushing himself too hard. Not enough rest. Maybe not enough blood. When she turned to look at him again, there was a softness to her edges once more. "Thank you," she murmured. "For coming straight here. With Lily."
