Brian's eyes widened when he heard the voice over the telephone. 'Blood?' he thought in Ferran's direction, rather than speaking. Telepathy had never bothered him in the way it did some people, perhaps because he had grown up with a telepathic mother. Of course, he was most used to having Nikolai in his head, but Ferran too was a familiar presence.
Finally, overtop of Lenore's rambling about rats and the sound of another voice over the phone, Ferran let Brian know where the student --Lenore -- was, and gave him an expectant look.
"All right. Hang on," Brian said, aloud this time. He took a firm hold of Ferran's elbow. Subway, Line B, 7th avenue. He formed a picture of that station in his mind -- having long ago traversed the entire subway line for just such a purpose -- and, without so much as a sound, the two of them disappeared, and reappeared above the subway line, in a tucked-away alleyway. There was no way Brian was teleporting into a busy subway station, at least not with someone else. He could make himself invisible, but not Ferran.
They emerged onto the main stretch, where the staircase to the subway opened up onto the sidewalk. "There we are."
