Conall had been stuck at the school for Christmas. It was only fair. He had gotten Thanksgiving off and spent it with his family, so now he had to work Christmas. He usually flip-flopped the holidays, going home for one and then the other every other year. It gave others a chance to spend their turns with their families, and it never made him feel like he was always missing the same holiday with his family. Still, he did tend to get bummed out when he didn't get to go home for Christmas. Even with Skype and all the other technology that allowed him to participate, he felt like he was missing out. So, he'd made it through Christmas, and even New Year's. But the news today plus his general malaise left him seeking liquid solace.
He hadn't really found much solace, but now he was on his way home to tuck himself into bed. His feigned cheerfulness manifested itself in a slurry version of Jingle Bells as he trudged through the snow. The ginger took little notice of anything except his feet and his voice, which meant he did not notice anyone else passing by.
