Ugh. The Holidays. Joel was happy they were done. This one happened to be especially hard. It was now the second holiday without his mother. And the worst part, this happened to be worse than Thanksgiving. His mother was Jewish so they usually did a Chrismukkah sort of thing, even if Hanukkah happened earlier. Des had her Hanukkah decorations out along with the Christmas ones but it somehow didn't feel right. Everything still just felt different. And because it felt different, it reminded Joel once again that he had little clarity on where his mother is, whether she is alive, and if she's alive, if she is okay. He felt like he was in limbo, like he was pausing mid-breath. He needed air. He needed to know where she was. He needed to save her. But there was nothing he could do. The whole holiday made him want to shut down again.
So after dinner and after a movie, Joel stumbled back to his room and proceeded just play video games until he couldn't keep his eyes open. He went to bed and when he woke up around late morning, he just crawled out of bed and began to play Call of Duty. Joel preferred to sleep in his undies and last night he just wore a pair of plaid boxers -- Stuart tartan, not that Joel knew that or really cared. He sat on the edge of his bed, his dark eyes dully looking at the screen. His nearly black long hair was tousled, a severe case of bed head. And he didn't shave for a couple days so had a bit of scruff.
Yep, this is how Joel expected to spend Boxing Day: sitting in his underwear playing Call of Duty. Nothing else. Well, maybe going to the bathroom and grabbing something to eat. But besides that. Joel just wanted to shut off his brain and shoot things.
