Back home, Tori had lived off of the local Salvation Army, and she meant that in as literal a way as possible. Coming to New York--all those years ago now--had been a complete and total sticker shock. Vintage was in vogue, and items that would've cost $2 at home were about $20 in the city. It was wrong, dead wrong, and she'd worn her clothes into the ground, battered as they were to begin with, before breaking down and looking for an actual store she could afford, mostly because she couldn't resign herself to buying anything new. If used was $20, she shuddered to think what something off the rack might've been. Another reason, she'd often thought, she should just go nude. Or beg the engineers to figure out a fabric that could withstand her bone manipulation. She'd wear that suit 24/7.
"Okay, so!" she chimed, hooking her arm in Cora's as she dragged her through the door of her favorite shop in Harlem. "I'm on a mission. And you kind of are, too. I? Need to find the perfect gift for Leo. Which could take no time at all or could take forever. I dunno. Gotta see what speaks to me today--if anything does. You? You need to find shoes. And I am going to get them for you." She beamed, grinning from ear to ear. "I won't take 'no' for an answer, either, so don't even think about it. You worked hard on the mission, you deserve a reward, and I want to get you something. That's enough. Don't make this hella awk." Glaring, trying to look stern, she wrinkled her nose and gave her arm a hug before letting go.
"We can look at other things, too, though. Because everything in here is fabulous and beautiful. I'm actually trying to find a knee length coat I saw last time. Leopard! I wanted it! I'm hoping to find it again and see that the price has dropped. But somebody probably bought it. I've accepted that awful possibility."
