Laurie liked Lux. What precisely he liked about her he couldn’t quite put into words, but that didn’t much concern him. He wasn’t the type that needed everything spelled out and was more than happy to just enjoy life as it came. Lux, however, was a pretty little puzzle he found himself intent on solving. The amount he knew about her could fit into a thimble, if he were in the habit of storing information in sewing supplies, and he’d resolved to edge his way into her life as best he could. Inevitably, she made him laugh or smile and it was only fair that he do the same, particularly when her day was rotten, like today seemed to be. Ice cream sandwiches and the opportunity to smash dishes were a nice bonus in all of this. She needed someone as ridiculous as him, he decided, so he was determined to be there.
Grabbing an old fraying backpack, Laurie dumped out all of its contents across his bedroom floor: scraps of paper, a few legos, pens, pencils, and an action figure slid out along the carpet. A quick glance into the bag told him it was empty enough for his purposes. After a moment of hesitation, he snatched up a few action figures, just in case they might prove useful for animating later that night. You could never overstate the usefulness of tiny plastic people, even if they were only doing a conga line in your living room. Next and last stop on his journey was the kitchen. First, he rummaged through the cupboards, locating all the breakable plates he knew belonged to him (and some that he was on the fence about). He had been dead serious about there being options: saving for later use or breaking all over the living room, either one worked for him. The plates clunked together as he dropped them into the bag with surprisingly careful motions. Next, a much simpler task, he started ice cream sandwich retrieval. Which consisted of him grabbing his unopened box of M&M cookie ice cream sandwiches and dropping it into his backpack.
As he ran out the door, the purple-haired boy reached out and snagged his worn, old leather jacket, a hand-me-down from his father before things with his family fell apart completely. The sleeves slipped over his arms easily and then the backpack fit on his shoulders snugly. He hoped that he’d remembered his keys. Well. He’d cross that bridge when he came to it, opting not to check now, since the door was already closed and locked behind him.
His phone lit up as he read over the last few messages between both himself and Lux as well as those with Ras. Grinning at the screen, he ran, very obviously not looking where he was going but avoiding most obstacles all the same, and bolted through the doors into the other student apartment building. In seconds, he dashed up the stairs to Lux’s apartment and was banging on the door while shouting.
“Sunshine. Hey, Sunshine. I’m here, with the delicious ice cream sandwiches and plates that I promised. Well. I don’t think the plates are delicious. I can try to eat them though. I probably wouldn’t die.”
