As much as Jason loved a Friday night out in the city, nothing compared to a spectacularly lazy night in. Especially in this weather—the chilly rain was all the reason he needed to take refuge in the Rec Center. (There were very many great things about Willowbrook and its proximity to New York City, but the cooler climate was not one of them.) Heaven, in his expert opinion, was a room with a large television, a variety of video game consoles, and enough food to feed a small country. If his options were lounging around in front of a flat screen versus overpriced bar drinks and exposure to the elements, then it was really no contest. Besides, he could always go out tomorrow night.
He’d left the convenience store with a comically large amount of snacks, and was currently planted on a couch in one of the TV lounges, surrounded by a sea of junk food. Jason had scrimped on nothing: he was armed with candy, chips, cookies, and sugary cereals, and the coffee table in front of him was already littered with empty wrappers and packages. Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be worthwhile on television. Hundreds and hundreds of channels, but all he could find were reality shows, old soap operas, the Spanish channel, and the same three reruns of Law & Order. Totally boring.
Yawning, he reached for another pack of Reese’s Cups as he changed the channel for the umpteenth time. He cocked an eyebrow at the title card of SpongeBob Squarepants. He paused for a moment, worrying his lip as he considered his options. SpongeBob was funny, and it wasn’t a procedural crime drama or House Hunters International. He set the remote down and leaned back into the couch, throwing his legs up across the table as if it were an ottoman.
He didn’t see anything wrong with watching cartoons for the next hour or four.
