The whole apartment had been almost completely remodeled. The living room had all furniture bolted to the floor or was removed. All sharp objects were gone. No stove or fridge either, only a mini fridge and a microwave for this chaperones. The one of them were sitting on a bolted down couch, texting on their phone. It was like any other night. Beside them hummed the minifridge with their coffee on it. They paused to log down the passing of another hour.

In the bedroom was a single low stage, two spot lights pointed at it, but they were off for the night. To the sides of the stage were dark purple sparkly curtains. On the floor around him was plenty of toys and games for him to play. Scribbly crayon drawings hung on the star painted walls. It looked like a child's room. Freddy himself was standing motionless on the stage, face in the permeant grin he always wore. In his left hand was his newly required microphone, on his right was Bon-Bon- lifted up high for the audience to see. Freddy's eyes stared ahead at the door, but he was watching the small blinking lights of the two cameras in his room. One above the door directly at him, the other inside the stage to his right. Slowly his head turned to stare at the camera, a giggle escaped his voice box.

"Hello Freddy." The chaperone called from the other room.

"Why H-H-Hello again!" Freddy replied with a laugh, Bon-Bon mimicked his laugh.

"It's bedtime now Freddy." The chaperone got up and walked to the door, Freddy's face turned to look at them. The chaperone raised an eyebrow, "Don't stay up past your bedtime now, or the kids won't be happy if you sleep through the show."

"Hahaha! I w-w-would never! Goodnight!" Freddy went still afterwards, but he was still watching. He watched his chaperone head back to the living room. After a few moments, he powered down into sleep mode. He was still, just listening, not so much watching anymore. There were no stimulants in his room, no lights or sounds, or anything. Just a soft darkness. If he was good maybe he could go out again, he so desperately wanted to go out again. It sounded like fun. He enjoyed the last time he got to go out and he had a picnic with Rid! Oh he wanted to go out again tomorrow to play hide and seek with Jay!

Rope, goggles, notebook? Check. Cellular? Had that. Gloves, tool pack, spider boots, crowbar, stinker tinker, clinker tinker, blinker tinker. Black sweater. At first, Scottwick thought the sweater was overdoing it- it was baggy and hard to put on- but it was what everyone wore in those magic mirror shows. As it turned out, the sweater was warm and helped muffle the sound of movement and jangling tools. He probably should have asked Umber and Jay for their expertise on the matter, but that was a lesson for next time.

This would be fine.

As he slunk invisibly up to the lit window of Alder 102, he mulled over some of the facts again. Freddy was something different. A marvellous construct, mobile, otherworldly, and of unknown autonomy. Both he and his auxiliary were capable of speech, albeit imperfect. Were they like Wright? Were they unique, hand crafted, enchanted, or put together as part of a mass production? Could they be weaponized? Security drones? Were they…sentient? Who built them? Why? Why the fixation with parties and games? It was a shame that the rabbit one tended to shut Freddy up when things got interesting. Scottwick wouldn't be surprised if it had goals of its own. But more on that in a moment.

It was his mission to learn as much as possible while he was here, he rationalized as he tested the weight of the crowbar. Such advanced constructs with alien technology were not something to be taken lightly. If Freddy’s secrets could help Allotail...he had a duty to learn aside from the itching, itching curiosity. Besides, he was only looking; he wasn’t out to harm Freddy. And he wasn’t getting blackout drunk, doing a murder, or blowing out power to the Halfway House, so Ginvorous should understand.

He’d opted for the window nearest where the kitchenette should be and was startled to see that it was completely changed inside, despite having the same layout as his own apartment. It made sense--if Freddy and his auxiliary had no need for the resources, they would be more useful elsewhere. But there was a bigger problem. Freddy and crew weren’t alone. Furthermore, there was no sign of Freddy, the magnificent automaton Freddy. He must be in one of the other rooms. The chaperone’s presence would complicate things, but as long as they were in the living room, it was just a matter of getting past them to the bedroom or bathroom where Freddy was.

Why the chaperone? Scottwick chewed on the question as he wiggled the crowbar in the window until he could feel the resistance of the latch. The chaperone could turn and see movement, so he wasted no time leveraging a gap with the crowbar and sliding a screwdriver between the panes where the latch was. He rammed the heel of his hand into the handle. There was a telltale snap--louder than he would have liked. Jay would not approve, but the deed was done. With the latch broken, he plucked his tools free, slid the window up, and climbed into the apartment while trying his best not to rattle.

The hallway ahead was dark in stark contrast to the bright living room on the left, and Scottwick crouched invisibly as he waited for the chaperone’s return and reaction. Had he been heard? If all went well, he would be able to just stroll past and into the hallway where Freddy was staying. But just in case...a diversion couldn't hurt. Carefully, he reached for his stinker tinker- a tiny, modified music box-- popped the lid, charged it with magic, and tossed it out the window. It landed with a clatter. Within moments, the acrid tang of electrical smoke drifted inside the apartment. The smoke alarm stayed silent.

When the snap rang out Freddy snapped out of sleep mode, coming to life as if a switch had flipped. His eyes slid over to the side to look at Bon-Bon. He started giggling, "Are we r-r-ready for round two?!" Bon-Bon giggled. He could hear his chaperone rushing to where the noise was.

"Oh shit!" They looked over the whole area for the source of the fire, then realized it was outside, they hurried back to Freddy's room. "Freddy, just stay put ok? I need to check something outside. I'm going to call Jackie ok?"

"Hahaha! Ok Stevie!" Freddy wore a large smile as Stevie pulled out their cellphone as they hurried to the door. Freddy followed them to the edge of his own doorway. Once Stevie left the apartment, phone ringing, Freddy turned towards the living room, "Hahaha I know you're over there somewhere~!" He started to walk towards the living room, unfazed by the smoke. He craned his head around, holding Bon-Bon up high and to the right, while they scanned around.

"I think it was just a mouse!"

"But I he-heard something break!" Freddy turned to look at Bon-Bon, they both faced each other while they spoke.
"Haha! Silly, we should wait for Stevie! Fire is dangerous!" Freddy stared at him, for a moment, listening for various sounds. He could hear the smoke hissing and the sound of someone moving around upstairs in the building. Slowly he lowered Bon-Bon to his shoulder height.

"Haha th-th-this is exciting! Let's play a game Bon-Bon!" Freddy turned his back to Scottwick, but his senses were sharp as a tack. He started to walk back into the hallway, but paused before turning quickly to see if there was movement.

While the chaperone was occupied, Scottwick skirted around the edge of the room, heart set on getting to the hallway. When Freddy emerged with Bon-Bon, he had to stop to appreciate them. Freddy was indeed a creation of wonder--a dozen times more advanced than Lovey and with an entirely different construction than Wright. Admittedly, the enormous smile was ...unsettling, but he couldn't exactly fault Freddy or Bon-Bon for something as minor as cosmetics. Scottwick stayed as still as possible while Freddy searched; he was observing, cataloguing every move that Freddy made, memorizing his conversation, the angles of his joints, his reaction times and visible components. The tiefling tilted his head as he tried to pick out the sound of a motor or signs of magical integration.

What's wrong with your voice, there, buddy?

The glitching and distortions sounded worse in person. If there was a chance of getting under that exterior metal plating...well it couldn't hurt to take a look-see. If Freddy didn't mind.

When Freddy turned his back, Scottwick took the initiative, assuming that "surveillance mode" had passed. He took several steps into the hallway after them, keen to see where he and Bon-Bon were going. As he walked, he reached in his sweater pocket for his phone. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have some photographs to study and cross-reference with his notes later.

He jumped when Freddy turned suddenly, and it felt like for a moment they locked eyes. Scottwick stumbled back, his metal tools and tinkers jangling with the movement. His grip on his phone slackened, and he fumbled to catch it as it flew forward and skittered past Freddy's feet with the audible--and now visible--cracking of glass.

Whoops.

After a split-second of thought, and a decision to take his chances with Freddy rather than the chaperone, he pressed himself against the wall with one finger pressed to his lips, and his other hand extended towards Freddy and Bon-Bon, spell still active.

"Sh-sh-sh-ssh! Don't scream and I-I-I can try to fix you!"

"Hahaha! I knew som-omeone was there! Where did you g-g-go?! Come on out!" Freddy looked around for the source of the jingling. His senses were getting crossed, he could hear but couldn't see anyone. "A-A-Are we playing hide and se-ek?" His eyes spied where the phone landed, he'd been preoccupied earlier, so he turned to face it. He reached down to pick it up, "Look Bon-Bon! The B-B-Birthday boy dr-r-ropped this!"

When Scottwick spoke Freddy whipped around, "Huh? Y-y-you're the technician!" Freddy started to walk forward, getting dangerously close to Scottwick. He towered over him, holding Bon-Bon out too look around as well. Bon-Bon was inches from his face. He was looking around while Freddy walked forward, glancing over Scottwick's frame entirely. He stopped in the living room. "Wh-Where did you go? I know y-y-you from the net-t-tworks!" Freddy wasn't sure where he was, now he wasn't fully sure he heard everything correctly. But he knew he heard a voice, from somewhere, but where? The vents? They were too small here for even Bon-Bon. The closets? Freddy tore them open, the doors threatening to come undone from their hinges, each closet came up empty. He walked back down the hallway, looking in the various rooms for the source of the voice.

Freddy stopped in the doorway back to his room, it was like Scottwick's entire existence was suddenly gone from his mind. Which it was, he couldn't see anyone so he must have imagined the technician's voice. He brought Bon-Bon to his face level, "Bon-Bon What do you th-th-think we sh-sh-should sing tomorrow?" He started to walk back into his room and up onto his stage. He stood still, returning to his spot he usually stood.

As Freddy loomed over, he couldn’t tell if it was fear or willpower that kept him rooted in place. He wasn't going to give himself away now, not in the hallway. For several heart-wrenching seconds, all he could see was automaton, and he became hyper aware of the mere inches between breathing and getting smashed by what had to be at least four hundred pounds of metal.

He stayed there in trembling silence until Freddy moved on, awed by the strength and methodical precision that they used to search the room. Gradually, his fear subsided and his heart rate returned to a manageable rhythm. He should probably leave--turn back now before the chaperone figured out what was up. But his encounter with the strange duo was only enlightening in terms of the outer plating. What he really needed to do was cast identify and get his hands underneath the exterior frame of one of the automatons. Freddy and Bon-Bon’s advanced communication, and independent multi-stage planning capabilities seemed impressive as one of Drosselmeyer’s creations. And his suspicions of Freddy were right and he didn't rely on magic of any kind...

There was a certain mission that kind of tech could be useful for.

Freddy's search seemed to turn off like a switch. With the hallway now clear and his goal fixed in his mind, Scottwick slunk further down and peeked through Freddy's door. Freddy seemed to have reset, and looked ready to put on some a stage performance. Through the darkness, Scottwick could make out childish artworks tacked to the walls and toys scattered on the floor. He did a double-take and paused, fully expecting an undecorated, utilitarian storage room. What kind of automaton needed toys?

Phone forgotten, Scottwick pulled his goggles over his eyes and tightened his gloves. Only one way to find out. He crept quietly into the room, failing to notice the cameras. He paused just inside the doorway.

"Good game, Freddy!” he whispered with breathless excitement, dropping the invisibility spell. Freddy knew who he was and they were out of sight of the chaperone, so there was no further point in hiding. He stalked forward, one hand gripping his notepad and pencil and the other twitching towards his toolbelt. “You found me, the technician! Say, let me have a look under your plates and I bet I could help you sing even better.” The apprehension he had was overshadowed by fixation, and he stared at Freddy and Bon-Bon with an obsessed glint in his eye.

Freddy heard footsteps long before Scottwick spoke. But the minute he appeared the animatronic snapped to attention. He remained on his stage until Scottiwck mentioned his plates and started moving forward. "No." Freddy started to walk forward, staring unbreaking at him. He didn't blink or break eye sight. Freddy dropped his microphone and it hit the floor with a loud thud. Bon-Bon started giggling, his hands moving to cover his face while he did so. Freddy kicked a toy that jingled, but his eyes didn't leave Scottwick's face. Bon-Bon swiveled to glance at the toy before looking back at Scottwick.

Freddy lunged grabbed Scottwick by the shoulder, his grip threatening to break his clavicle bone. He forcibly walked Scottwick back, screaming into his face- a loud deep metallic screech that almost sounded like... a distorted child's scream. He threw Scottwick back into the hallway, Bon-Bon was hanging onto Freddy's shoulder, giggling childishly. He leapt from Freddy and screamed a high pitched distorted scream into Scottwick's face pulling at his hair and ears. Freddy ducked under the doorway, eyes still locked onto his target. He reached down to grab Scottwick by the shoulder, Bon-Bon jumped back to Freddy's left arm. Freddy opened his mouth wider than he'd ever done so before, Scottwick could see an interior set of teeth- an endoskeleton. He looked poised to bite down on his head.

The door slammed open, "Freddy put him down!" A woman's voice rang out. Freddy moved in for the fatal bate, aiming directly for the side of Scottwick's head. A bright flash filled the room as the crackling of electricity. Scottwick fell to the ground. Freddy reeled back, and all of his plates slid open, exposing the electricity that zipped along his endoskeleton. A woman was standing behind him, touching his side. Freddy's plates slid shut and he hunched over, eyes closed. Bon-Bon laid at his feet, also unmoving, eyes closed.

The woman pushed her now frazzled hair out of her face and glared at Scottwick, "What the hell are you doing here?!" A second set of footsteps came careening through the front door. They belonged to the original chaperone, who was panting and staring wide eyed.

Scottwick stared at the chaperone in confusion. When did he end up on the floor? “Fred...needed--need...” There was a gap. Something had gone wrong. He tried to remember.

“Fainted, think,” he finished, stumbling over his words as the chain of events clicked back together. Asking to see under Freddy’s plates. The scream of a little child--but there was no child here. There was no child here? Children weren’t made of metal, didn’t sound like that. That meant something, had to mean something. The conclusion slid away from him.

And teeth. Rows and rows of metal teeth. Too many teeth--springs and coils and all matter of familiar things turned nightmare, an endoskeleton holding the automaton together, dark bolts and strips of metal like sinew. He remembered Freddy lunging and grabbing him effortlessly. The rabbit was everywhere at once, and then Freddy opened in the most horrible way; Scottwick saw under the plates and there were those teeth, metal and everywhere, and he was going to die, and then...

He put a hand to his ear, sure that the numbness meant an earring had torn or worse. His hand came back clean. Scottwick stared at it in confusion, then back at Freddy, hunched motionless with Bon-Bon. His mouth ran dry. For once, his need to investigate under the plates was gone. He did not want to see under them after all.

The chaperones came into focus again as the original came through the door. Scottwick froze, the sight of them sending him into a panic. His notes, his notes, they couldn't get his notes. The room was plunged into magical darkness as instinct took over. He tried to scramble up, desperate to get to his papers first and get away, only for the dull throbbing in his shoulder to flare badly. The floor pitched under him, and the darkness dissipated before the spell even fully took hold. He caught himself against the wall and slid back to the ground, shaking.

Fine. He was fine. They were just chaperones, normal chaperones. They stopped the automatons. Chest heaving, he clutched his shoulder and tried not to think about how close Freddy had come to killing him. The skin wasn’t broken, but he could feel that something wasn’t right, and moving his shoulder or his collarbone was definitely a bad idea.

“Got in,” he admitted, slumping. The flight had left him. He was caught, there was no worming his way out of this one. “Window. Wanted to see him.” He knew he was going to get in trouble for this. Freddy and Bon-Bon had not been what he had thought they were. Not at all. "What--," he swallowed, staring at their fallen forms through the doorway. "What are they?"

"Woah!" They exclaimed when the room suddenly went dark. "Stevie help him, Freddy's going to wake back up again soon." The woman said and motioned to Scottwick after the room returned to normal.

"Well they're animatronics. I think anyone can see that..." Stevie helped Scottwick up carefully, "Come on let's sit in the living room, I know first aid."

Behind them Freddy twitched and came to life once more, "Are you r-r-ready to pa-arty?!" He exclaimed in a happy voice, moving on a set pattern as if he wasn't alive just moments before. The woman picked up Bon-Bon and held him up to Freddy. "Bon-Bon! What are y-y-you doing you ra-a-ascal!" Freddy took Bon-Bon and reattached him to where he was missing his left hand. "Now we're re-ady for the show! Hahahaha!" The woman started saying something to Freddy, who looked down at her as if listening.

"Can you explain what the hell this is?" Stevie put Scottwick's stinker tinker on the table. They helped Scottwick sit on the couch then went to the kitchen to grab their first aid kit. "Whatever the heck it did it was a very convincing electrical fire." They sat on the couch next to him, and started getting stuff out. "What did he do to you?"

"More importantly, why the hell did you come here." The woman returned looking as stern as she did before. He sat on the chair opposite of them. "This area is not public property, so you are trespassing." She put one leg over the other and stared expectantly at Scottwick, "You said you wanted to see him. Why? And why come in the middle of the night, through the window?"

While she waited for Scottwick to answer she took out her notebook and started writing down some notes. In the hallway they could hear large metal footsteps. Freddy ducked into he living room, a half solved rubix cube in his hand. He seemed very preoccupied by it, moving it around with his hands and then giving it to Bon-Bon to try as he wandered around. He didn't seem to pay Scottwick much mind yet. Neither Stevie nor the woman gave Freddy much mind as he stood in the kitchen for a bit with his new toy. Stevie focused on helping put Scottwick's arm in a makeshift sling and the woman watched him for his answers to her questions.

"What's an animatron..." Scottwick turned halfway as he let Stevie help him to the living room, trying to catch a glimpse of the animatronics as they turned on. Reset. So did they have memory, or didn't they? Freddy’s voice sent a shiver down Scottwick’s spine. There was no possible reason a party “animatronic” needed so many sets of teeth. Nevertheless, he was somewhat relieved that whatever damage had been done didn’t seem permanent.

After they settled on the couch, he sat very still aside from an occasional nervous twitch. It had been some time, but Scottwick was familiar with these kinds of questions. And based on the quarantine debacle, he got the sense that being uncooperative now would only land him in trouble he couldn’t get out of later. He looked at the tinker. "Ah, that. It's--it's just a silly magic toy, doesn't start actual fires. Just the smells. Usually it does vanilla citrus.”

“As for what happened with Freddy, we ah, didn’t get on and things went...bitey,” Scottwick blinked away echoes of childlike screams with a shake of his head. “-But I’m fine. Because you...um. Thank you. I’ll fix up later, I don’t think there was any organ damage...ah…” He tensed at Stevie's proximity, but let them help with his arm. With Stevie’s assistance, it was already feeling some relief.

Scottwick looked up at Freddy, now wandering, with a mixture of apprehension, intrigue, and guilt. "...Wanted to learn how he worked,” he admitted at last. “See his natural state, find a power source. Learn if he was sentient or magical...” Even after the encounter, there was still awe in Scottwick’s voice when he talked about Freddy. “I mean, just--just look at him! And that’s just the outside. So...inside, window. It made...sense at the time. Breaking and entering, I know.” Scottwick just hadn’t bet on Freddy attacking on sight or recognizing him so easily. Or reacting so violently. Or getting caught. “Besides, I didn’t plan on dismantling anything unless he said okay!”

“What...um,” he tore his gaze away from Freddy and turned his attention to the chaperones. “What happens next? Thank you, of course for all your help, but if it’s okay with you I’d like to get my things and be going, I’d really, really shouldn’t inconvenience you any longer. Also, I don’t fancy getting turned into pudding by our friend here.” He laughed nervously and edged halfway behind Stevie, tail tucked tight around an ankle as he tracked Freddy’s movements. Freddy had made good progress on the puzzle box. The chaperones didn’t seem concerned but...would he charge again?

"So you said you were a tech?" The woman looked surprised, then looked at Stevie before shaking her head. "Let me ask you something," She started while writing down a new notes, "You know what a trigger is right? Well he," she nodded to Freddy who was watching Bon-Bon twist the rubix cube in fascination," has a couple. One of them is deactivation-" Freddy's head whipped around as if on cue, he stared at the woman with the same stares he'd given Scottwick, "of the television Freddy. I was just saying it needed to be turned off."

"Okie d-d-d-okie! Hahaha!" Freddy started to go back to what he was doing. Stevie stood up, Scottwick's arm now in a makeshift sling, they started to talk to Freddy about going back to his stage. The woman gave Scottwick a "see?" raised eyebrow. She wrote a couple more notes.

"We're not sure why he reacts that way, but it is something that causes him to get aggressive as if out of self defense." She sighed, "I shouldn't be telling you that at all, but I want you to understand where you went wrong. Besides, even if he said it was ok, d-i-s-m-a-n-t-l-i-n-g him would most likely be against some kind of rule since you're not on his chaperone team." She looked up at him with a less stern but more down to earth kind of face. Freddy didn't seem to care about her spelling out a word, and started to follow Stevie into the Hallway.

He turned to look at Scottwick, "H-H-Hello again! I remember you." He paused in order to watch Scottwick for a moment longer, then noticed the small object on the table, pausing to look at that for a moment, then looked back at Scottwick, "You don't ha-ave the shock." Bon-Bon giggled and hid his face behind the scrambled rubix cube.

"Freddy, it's his birthday, did you know that?" The woman spoke easily. Freddy's expression seemed to change to surprise.

"H-H-HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hahahahaha!" He laughed, breaking into a large smile, "I like you. You didn't hu-urt us. I have to g-g-go back to my sta-age now. Bye-Bye Bir-rthday boy b-b-boy!" Freddy and Bon-Bon waved and he started t leave fully.

"I'll let you go after we go to the hospital with you. And for the record, he doesn't turn people into pudding, he just bites." She stood up and grabbed her keys from beside her, "Come on. No police station tonight. I'll treat what happened as a warning ok? Don't come back here at night. If yo want to see him, come during the day and knock on the front door like a normal person. Now come on, you'll want to get that shoulder looked at."
