Good things come to those who wait.
It was a quiet night, chilly and damp with the first hints of autumn. The moon was full in the night sky, it cast sharp, silvery shadows on the sidewalks of the Harbor District between the clouds.
Most of the employees at the shops lining the road had gone home for the night, leaving the area nearly deserted save for a handful of closers finishing up their shifts and a smattering of young people on their way to or from a night out. But these people weren’t here, not in this corner of the street.
The oasis of white lights from the plaza’s streetlamps stood out in stark relief against the still, pooling darkness at the edges of their reach. In this corner, the air hung thick with a sense of patient waiting. Only the wind disturbed the unnatural tranquility as it blew an empty chip bag through the small plaza. The bag caught on the leg of a bench and stayed there, twitching in the breeze. The night air that buffeted it was laced with another scent: woody and dusty with the pungent muskiness of wet leather.
It didn’t have to wait long before someone happened upon the plaza.
The voice that broke the silence came from an unlit alleyway, where the brightness from the lamps didn’t quite reach beyond the gap in the building. A young man with a mop of brown hair and who was drowning in an oversized beige duster swayed near the entrance, just barely visible in the light from the plaza. He rocked gently back and forth almost drunkenly, and looked towards the passerby with unfocused, glassy eyes.
“Can I make a phone call?”
