What: The Summer Festival!
When: Friday September 18th - Saturday September 19th
Where: Stone Brick Park
Status: Ongoing, Open
Warnings: TBD

As summer draws to a close, the leaves on the trees at Stone Brick park are beginning to flare crimson and gold, and the sun is gradually getting lower in the sky. Out on the field, the residents of the Halfway House have set up tables for games and food, live music, and as the highlight of Friday evening, a live performance of Romeo and Juliet! After the performance, the cast and crew will be having an afterparty at the park. The celebrations will continue through Saturday evening, so come by the park this weekend, and close out the summer with a bang!

(OOC: Under the headers below, you can post your threads and narratives for your characters at the festival, during the play, and at the afterparty for the play.)

Koal | OPEN TO MULTIPLES!

The oni had just finished his performance at the Romeo and Juliet play. Despite the numerous amount of slip ups with the really hard to understand dialogue, he thought he'd made it out okay. The cast and crew really made him feel welcome. Looks like he hadn't been the only one to be completely and utterly confused. Koal still had no idea what the play was about, something about a romance? He had no idea. He just tried to follow his lines and stick to the script. I hope Umber saw...plays aren't really my thing. But I wanted to do this together, with him. He's felt so distant these days. He sighed. The play was over! Now Koal could go back to working out at the gym without reading a script out loud while doing so. So what if I forgot a few lines? At least I didn't narrowly destroy the stage! Yeah!

When the cast and crew party had been pitched, Koal wasn't really for it. The last party he'd attended had gone incredibly sour. A fallen chandelier, suspicious wait staff, and then going to a portal and fighting a behir...parties usually were recipes for disaster. He'd been hesitant, but he figured since he knew most of the people there, he'd might as well give it a shot!

Drunk karaoke with Scottwick has nothing on this. Someone had suggested they do karaoke, but it was nothing like it had been back at the gala. That had been easier, more of a game of improvisation and free-style rap. He guessed it could've been harder at the gala, but Scottwick had pretty much taken the lead on that one. Koal had just done it out of mere spite since Umber had dipped. He knew why now though, and he felt bad about it. It would've been nice to dance with him...

"What song do you think we should do?" He asked the person next to him, they were going to sing a duet or something. Or was it a sing-off? Dance-off? Sing-off, dance-off combo? Koal had no idea. "I don't know any of these songs."

"I," Scottwick threw an arm over Koal from behind, gently but decisively bumping aside whoever had been there before. "Do not know any of them, either. Hey Koal, how's it going? Long time no see."

He hadn't bothered to change out of his dark tech clothing, and bits of sand and sticky web clung to his hair and clothes. One of his goggle lenses was missing, his gloves were singed and he was clutching a can of energy drink. He picked a piece of web off and very deliberately wiped it on Koal.

"On nights like tonight, when you've been through hell and back with the electrical, collapsing scaffolding- thank the gods nobody fell off- illusiary combuster boxes chain-reacting and spewing everywhere, stage literally breaking, lichtenberg lighting, et cetera, et cetera, a little dance-off and enjoyment is earned, eh?" He grinned at Koal. The play had been exciting, no doubt about it. Scottwick had used up all of his magic trying to help Rin, Yukine, Seto, and Oliver get everything up and running again. "At least there's no behir or creation gods at this one. And no chandelier, it looks like!"

"Anyway. You looked like you did pretty well down there, from what I could see. I tried to watch your bit but things got pretty nuts. You didn't blow anything up, though, and you weren't like that one guy who died three times and only got one of them on cue..." He paused to step forward as another duo left the performance area and the queue moved up. "By the way, have you found your fellow, our dear director? He looked and sounded pretty exhausted, poor guy."

"Oh hey, Scottwick!" Koal was startled by the touch from behind. He relaxed a little. "Are you okay?" He noticed the appearance Scottwick held. The guy had been on tech while the stage was falling apart. The tech crew had barely been able to contain it. Koal had been on stage when it happened. He stifled a grim laugh at Scottwick's reminiscing of the last few times things had completely fallen apart. "Thank Crocid no one got hurt."

"I haven't seen him since the play ended." Koal admitted. Umber had seemed furious. He'd only seen that look a few times. It was hard to make Umber mad, but when he got that way...whew. He'd taken Jay and Carnelian to the side for destroying the stage. "I should check on him." He seemed really upset...

Koal rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, thanks. There was a lot of lines, I froze up and forgot most of them. Ended up making up most of the lines. The audience didn't seem to notice. Plus my scene partner was really good so playing off of him was easy." He laughed. "I just wanted to do my best to help Umber make it the best play it could be, y'know? He's felt so distant lately, doing the play was a way the two of us could hang out more..." I still don't know what's up with him. I should ask... Koal felt good admitting that to Scottwick, he felt he could trust him.

"I guess you're right, we should celebrate." The oni shrugged. "I'll do one song. Don't know any of them, but we could do a dance-off. After that I'll go find Umber, what do you say? Ready to lose?"

"Hey, even if he's distant, I'm sure he'll come around with a talk or two and you can figure everything out. I know he was worried about how you felt about G--," Scottwick trailed off. It wasn't really his place to talk to Koal about Umber's concerns, and he trusted them to work it out on their own. "Getting so many lines," he finished lamely, his right hand unconsciously moving to fiddle with his opposite glove.

The music changed abruptly to what sounded like a modern dance song, and Scottwick took the opportunity to change the subject by moving further up the line. At this rate, it looked like they would go next.

"You're on, Koal. Though if you think I'm losing, you have another thing coming. You may be good at singing and acting, but when it comes to a dance-off, your monk booty is going to get kicked into next Tuesday." Scottwick puffed his chest out and gestured widely at Koal in a show of mock bravado, nearly smacking someone dancing nearby. He pulled his arm back with a sheepish giggle. It was nice to spend time with Koal again, and he was glad that his friend seemed to be open to having a good time.

The last pair between the two of them and the dance floor left, leaving the circle open for them to take over.

"Oh, yeah." Koal ignored the small mess-up and correction, blissfully unaware. "The language they were written in was Common, but it felt like...old Common. I don't know. Who uses 'thou' and 'hath' in sentences? Plus the phrasing of a lot of it...I hardly knew how I should act in the play." The oni shrugged. "I know I forgot some stuff, but the audience didn't seem to notice. I'm just glad it's over. The performance, I mean. Practices were a lot of fun. I'm gonna miss the cast."

When the music changed, Koal found himself doing a small little groove in the line. Inconspicuous, but this beat was pretty nice. He tapped his foot to the beat on the floor as he anxiously awaited their turn.

"If there's any losing around here, it'll be you doing it." Koal teased, grabbing hold of the microphone as their turn in line came. He got up on stage, his fright returning briefly for a moment as he stared blankly at the crowd ahead of them. It's just the cast. It'll be fine. Yeah. We've done stuff like this around each other before. I should be an expert by now. He glanced back at Scottwick. And I'm not gonna let him beat me in front of them!

An upbeat hip hop song started to play before Koal even had the chance to make a selection. He panicked momentarily as he put the microphone back on it's holder. Then Koal started to dance, he was careful with his footing as to not knock anything over. As he danced, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his oni mask. He did a headstand, then flipped from it, landing on his toes as he put his mask back on. His human disguise dropped and he was back to his pink haired normal self.

"Your turn."

"I was wondering what those words were. But from what I could tell you did a pretty good job!" Scottwick grinned and mirrored Koal's little groove. "Tech team was great, they're all really good people. And it was nice to be able to meet up for practices while it lasted. I certainly wouldn't mind doing it again if the opportunity came up."

Scottwick found the party energizing. With everything that happened recently, getting used to a new place, having Ginvorous in his head, and juggling classes with strict professors, he hadn't had much time to relax. It was nice to just spend time with Koal and unwind. Sure, he'd rather be a little tipsy...but it wasn't worth dealing with the nagging.

Koal's routine was phenomenal. Where had he learned to dance like that? Scottwick clapped loudly with the rest of the crowd, and offered Koal a high-five as they switched places. "You've set quite a high bar, Koal. The magic mask was a brilliant touch, I think!" He doubted he could beat something like that, but he'd rather eat his socks than not try.

The song changed to a number with a heavy beat drop and a quick melody. Scottwick showed off an energetic folk dance. It didn't match the music exactly, being made for offbeat harpsicords and fiddles, but he was able to adjust to the rhythm and kept up a long streak of rapid, intricate jig steps. He finished with a small bow and two-fingered salute to the crowd, then dove out the circle to meet up again with Koal, huffing from the exertion and giggling with delight.

"So I think you won that one, but for the sake of my pride, what do you say we put it down in the books as a draw?"

Umber | Carnelian | Jay

Overall he'd been coming to terms with the disaster that was his play. He should have seen it coming when Carnelian and Jay begged him to let them use more flare. He should have known. What happened to one step ahead Umber who was tactful and crafty and knowledgeable? He was blind sided for the excitement of putting on a play. Parties and plays were always his weakness. Givnorous's "It could have been worse" did little to improve his mood.

"Hey everyone! I just want to say, great job! We had some hiccups, both major and minor, but over all I think we did well as a cast. Thanks for agreeing to be in the play and sticking to it! Have a great night." Umber gave his short rally before turning everyone loose to go have fun and eat and drink. A lot of people were still in costume, which was fine. The whole rally took place less than an hour after the play itself. "Oh! Carnelian, Jay, I want to talk to you. Come here a second."

He pulled them aside with a smile, which changed instantly, "Seriously. You two said a little flare. Not destroy the entire stage. The only reason you even had lighting was because I casted it and the only reason the stage still stood was because Rin held it up until we got a permanent fix." His voice was thin and his eyes disapproving, "I specifically said not to go over board and interrupt people's cues and lines. I specifically said that because a theater production is a team effort. Your fancy fight, while all showy and the audience loved it, caused hell for the tech and stage crews." He paused for a second to let out a long deep sigh, "I know I said it was ok, and I shouldn't have. Not when it was so close to performance night. But what's done is done and that's that. Apologize to your tech and stage crew. They had to handle the down fall of your actions alongside their normal duties."

Umber looked tired, which he was, his whole body felt like he'd been the lead actor the entire night. He rubbed his forehead and his tail lashed back and forth at the end, "That's all. Have a good night guys." He gave them a thin lipped flat smile and let them go. Umber blew air from between his teeth and stood there for a moment to collect himself.

Carnelian blinked. She thought it had gone quite well, overall. She had not set the stage alight, and none of the background characters had been stabbed by a wayward blade or lightning bolt. Perhaps plays were different here. The final performance had differed from dress rehearsal... "So it was not good? This is common practice in the court of Vin Perrellas. The team had done a very good job to keep Jay from being brained by the sandbag which fell from the sky."

Sensing that this was, perhaps not the best time to go on a tangent, Carnelian paused. Most of the stage crew were still around if an apology was necessary. Someone she vaguely remembered as being on tech passed nearby, covered in fine dust and bearing what looked like a battle wound. The not-tiefling Rin Okumura had also risked splinters, she recalled. Was he here too? He had been under the stage, yes?

"I digress. Perhaps our passion had outmatched the structural supports of the venue. I had noticed there was more screaming from the overhead platforms than I had usually known. The lights did change, also. And I did not know there would be aerial bombardment, the big darkness, giant spiderwebs, and as much of the improv. The stage breaking...there is bad construction, yes?" Umber wore an expression she had seen on only a handful of directors after a handful of productions. She took a casual step far out of reach. If they had gone too far, the past was the past. "We will apologize, yes. We will do this. Jay will also do this." She looked at Jay for confirmation.

"Would I be excused if I didn't actually think I'd black out the entire auditorium?" Jay wore a nervous grin, stifling nervous laughter as he twiddled his thumbs back and forth. "The audience did seem to enjoy it, we got a standing ovation...but I guess, destroying the stage...wasn't the best idea."

The battle had been quite boring with just moderate choreography. Cole could do better, and he hated dancing. So when Umber had given the two of them more or less freedom to cross swords during their scenes, Jay was happy to assist. The two of them decided they'd hold back only a little bit, and Jay would lose on purpose. Though, his electricity had been so strong that when he hit the ground he short circuited the entire room and some of the lights sparked up and nearly fell on the audience. Not his best moment in show business. Thankfully no one in the audience had suspected a thing.

"Yes--err, sorry, I'll help repair the stage and pay for damages." Jay apologized after Carnelian nudged him, and once he realized Umber wasn't going to let him get off easy. The crew had been so disappointed in the two of them. Oh come on! At least he'd remembered his lines. And Rid...oh man, he'd started reciting another script mid-production.

Umber | Koal
[info]locked_away
2020-09-23 08:51 am UTC (link)
It was a few hours into the party, a lot of people were dancing and partying, but not Umber. He was exhausted, worn out from the stress of the play and the anxiety before the play began. He rubbed his temples as he sat on a park bench. His tail was resting along the ground by his feet. In his other hand was a cup which was half soda half rum. He'd snuck the alcohol in himself, something he'd often done. He was good at hiding things on his person.

He slouched into the bench, sighing deeply. It could have been worse. Someone could have died. For your first play it wasn't that bad. "Seriously...? It was a disaster. They broke the stage." The audience enjoyed it. "Yeah.... That's a solace at least... It's not as bad as it could have been." Umber sighed deeply, "It was a mess though. But yeah yeah, my first time directing I know." He waved a hand and sipped from his cup.

His eyes trailed around the party, looking at the cast and several audience members. At least the cast seemed to have a good time. Apart from missing cues they didn't have too many missed lines... He let his head fall back, a long exhale escaping his nose. It was far from perfect and far from what it had been during rehearsals. He shouldn't have ever let Jay and Carnelian improvise. "Ginvorous. Remind me later to get something nice for everyone on the tech crew. That was a hellish experience..."

Hellish does not nearly come close. It was an inconvenience at best. But of course, I will remind you later. For now, just enjoy the night. Umber grumbled, what was Ginvorous planning?. It was still his fault that the play wasn't successful. An oversight as director. He leaned forward in his seat, his whole body felt like a rock. He raised the cup to his lips and the rim against them. He stared ahead blankly, as if lost in thought. But his mind sort of seemed to mellow out, like the ripples evening in a pond. He sighed and took another sip from is cup.

Umber | Koal
[info]bitchassposer

"There you are! I was wondering where you went." Koal's face wore a big smile the second he had found Umber, he picked up the pace, rushing towards the park bench. Koal lifted Umber's free hand to his lips and left a small kiss on the top of the tiefling's knuckles. "Can I sit?"

The cast party had been a lot of fun. Koal was just glad that the whole performance thing was all over. He doubted that in the future he'd want to participate in stage productions, who knew it could be so explosive? He'd known he had messed up his lines and missed a few cues, but he thought he'd done okay. Next time he would do better! If there was even going to be a next time. He knew most of the cast wouldn't be invited back. The party had been fun, too. It was nice to be able to hang out with the cast and crew again. Koal had loved the dynamics they'd all had during practice, so being able to have fun at a party with them? It was a win in Koal's book.Glad there's no suspicious wait staff this time. Or behirs. Or giant chess boards. Or falling chandeliers. Kinda cool to see everyone come together like this.

But it just wasn't the same without him there.

Umber had been missing from it all. He'd distanced himself the second he'd finished speaking with Jay and Carnelian. The oni had picked up on it early that he was upset. After doing a karaoke-dance-off against Scottwick, Koal had made it a mission to find where Umber had gone. Koal still hadn't had the chance to dance with Umber, something he'd been secretly wanting to do since the gala. But none of that mattered now. He hasn't been himself. At least not recently.

Out here it was quiet. Koal could hear the loud, popping music from indoors as someone, he suspected Jay, belt out a song he'd never heard of before, followed by a crowd cheering and chanting along. Everything was muffled out here, it was peaceful, comforting in a way. Clashing against the sounds of the party, Koal could hear crickets chirping. The oni kept hold of Umber's hands as he took a seat next to him. He didn't say anything for a little while, he just sat next to him. Koal allowed his tail to find Umber's and wrap around his loosely.

"I know it--didn't go the way you thought it would." Koal's eyes stared in the direction of the party. "But it wasn't that bad. Everyone did stand up and clap afterwards." He turned to Umber. "We'll fix the stage, and I'm sure they'll let you do another play soon..."

Koal's voice trailed off as he realized what he was saying. No. That can't be it. Can it? There's got to be something else.

"Hey," He made eye contact with Umber, giving his hand a squeeze. "Are you okay? You know you can tell me anything, right?"

Koal's approaching voice made Umber look up. The still mind Ginvorous gave him started to twist and tumble with thoughts again as Koal came over. A small tired smile rested on Umbers lips when Koal kisses his hands and sat next to him. Umber wrapped his tail back around Koal's so that they would be intertwined.

His smile started to fade when Koal start reassuring him. It felt like everyone had been trying to reassure him it wasn't that bad. Yeah everyone stood up afterwards, yeah no one died, but the stage still broke and this wasn't even about that anymore. This was about fucking up something he really liked. About failing to be a leader. About making a big mistake. It was like the cherry on top of a laundry list of shit that had been bothering him.

Umber's eyes studied Koal's face, he looked pained. He couldn't hide it from Koal. He looked back at Koal's eyes, holding the gaze for a moment before he dropped it. He could feel a gentle nudge, like an urging at the back of his mind, Tell him.. Umber looked back at the grass. He took a sip of his drink, "No. I'm not. I'm not okay Koal." His voice was hollow. He put his drink down and rubbed his face. "I...." He trailed off. What was he doing? It wasn't the time to tell him about everything. It was an afterparty. This should be about the play and everyone's performances... Despite the slip up, "I just... I just feel wiped out from everything. It was really stressful behind the scenes." He gave a flat smile, chickening out of telling Koal was was really bothering him.

Silence fell between them. That was a half baked lie at best. Koal was never going to believe that. He's a smart man. Umber you must tell him. I cannot chase away your thoughts forever. This will eat you up inside. Umber's hand left Koal's, he held his face. Everything felt so tight in him, his head felt like it was under the ocean. Then tell him of them. You miss them greatly. At least release some stress. "I..... I fucking miss them." Umber broke down, his shoulders quivered then tears started rolling down his cheeks. "I miss them so much."
