OOC INFO Name: Em Age: AIM: EmsGotIssues E-mail: emsgotissues@gmail.com Timezone: CST Experience: 5 or 6+ Need an invite code?: sure (An anonymous friend and this site used for reference: http://www.helpguide.org/mental/bipolar IC INFO Basic Info Full Name: Deke Jesse Slayton Nicknames: Deke (pronounced ‘deek’) or DJ Age: 16 Birthday: 14 April 1993 House and Year: Wardwell Junior Electives:Spell Theory for Elective 1, Advanced Transfiguration for Elective 2, and Elective 3 was kept open for Quodpot Wand: Holly, Hinkypunk Hair core, 11.5 inches, and sturdy Boggart: A fat police officer in a bikini holding handcuffs in one hand and a bottle of pills in the other. Fat and bikini because he really likes the pretty ladies and a fat one seems to be something straight out of a nightmare, police officer and handcuffs because he’s afraid of being busted for drugs, and a bottle of pills because he’s scared of going to the doctor and being officially diagnosed as bipolar. Patronus: Though he can’t cast it yet, it will be the Chameleon: ~Ordinarily chameleons signify deceit and self advancement, even though others suffer. Taken from here, and explains (partially) why he was sorted into Wardwell. ~Chameleons are noted for their ability to change color. Color changes appear to be related to environmental temperatures as well as other external stimuli. Taken from here and shows that his patronus is also a result of his bipolar disorder. ~According to Wikipedia, chameleons have been found in Florida (where he’s from). Wiki goes on to say, “When a person is described as chameleon, the reference to the animal is generally a commentary on the person's ability to blend into various social situations, often to mean the person has no true values, or that he quickly abandons them in company if it's convenient to do so. [This explains that despite having a Christian background, he doesn’t actively practice. It also shows that he possibly began smoking pot to blend in with the other beach bums he’s grown up around. In other words, he’s everybody’s friend. Religious Affiliation: raised Christian, but doesn’t actively practice Extracurricular activities: Quodpot running back / safety Family/Relationships Parents: Jack (currently very ill with liver cancer) and Barbara Slayton Siblings: ~Laura Jane Slayton, 24, half sister from his father’s previous marriage. Deke and Jane are hot and cold with each other; some days they’re the best of friends, and others they are picking out the other’s tombstones. Ethan Wayne Slayton, 13, and a pain in the ass as far as Deke is concerned. Ellie Mae Slayton, 10, Deke’s full sister and most important person in his life. He is extremely protective of her. Extended Family: Both Jack and Barbara come from a long line of witches and wizards that have interbred with Muggles and Purebloods alike. Because of this interbreeding, Barbra carries the genes for bipolar disorder, which she has unfortunately passed down to her eldest son. ~Grandfather Porter, his mother’s father, still alive and currently staying at Jack and Barbara’s. ~Uncle Kevin, his father’s little brother, his wife Karen, and their 2 kids, Keith and Kristin. Apparently, they thought it would be cute if everyone in the family had a name that started with ‘K.’ ~Aunt Lisa, his mother’s sister, a single woman in her early 40s. She’s much too involved with her own projects to notice she’s single. But since she doesn’t have any kids, it’s not unusual for her to send random gifts to her sister’s kids. ~Uncle Gregory, his father’s older brother, committed suicide shortly after his, Jack’s, and Kevin’s mother died. Never married or had children. ~Uncle Mark, his mother’s brother, whom the family no longer talks to. He’s in prison for child molestation… Deke is one of the victims, but he refuses to talk about it swearing he doesn’t even know “that Mark-guy.” ~John Walker, Jack’s best friend. Someone that will become more like a father to Deke, Ethan, and Ellie Mae after Jack dies. Sexuality: straight Significant Others: currently, none Appearance PB: Jonathan Brandis Physical description: His long-ish blond hair would normally hang down to his eyes, but more often than not, it sticks out every which way as though he has been trying to pull the massive amount of ideas and thoughts out of his head. He has a dimple in his chin, and Deke’s eyes vary from the color of the sky to the green of an olive. In relation to his mood disorder and his patronus, his eyes will change color depending on his mood. Normally they’re as blue as the calm seas, almost hypnotic for people looking into them, but when there’s a storm coming (or a mood swing, as the case may be), they change to the green of a violent and angry ocean trying to drown the sailors that dare to tread across its surface. His clothes also change with his mood. If he’s feeling dark, and heading into a mixed episode, he’ll wear darker colors and leather jackets. But when he’s happy or swinging into a manic phase, the coloring of his clothes get brighter, bolder, and more sun-n-surf oriented. He has a slender frame, but his muscles from his active lifestyle can be seen beneath his sun-tanned skin. Average of height, and perhaps a tad thinner than most kids, he gives off the appearance of someone that has grown, but not filled in all the way yet. When he phases into mania, his thin figure seems to look even more gaunt, and with his messy hair, he oftentimes puts out the vibe of being a psychopath, though he means no harm to himself or anyone around him. There are no tattoos or piercings on his body, but there is a small star-shaped pucker on his left side where he suffered an injury forcing one of his ribs to snap off and protrude from his skin. He fell out of a tree when he was 7, cracking several ribs, shattering his left wrist, twisting his right ankle, and snapping the one rib. The doctors thought it was a miracle that he hadn’t suffered a massive head-injury as well (an early sign of the wizard within). Being a Florida native, he finds Salem to be a cold and rather unfeeling sort of place. He longs to return to the warm beaches of Florida, and looks forward to every trimester break. Personality Likes: water and water sports, the beach, girls in bikinis, music, different island cultures, sunsets and late nights Dislikes:ethnic foods, morning, rules and regulations Quirks: ~He scowls when he’s thinking about something often rendering him as angry, though he’s really not. ~When he is manic, he is constantly tugging or pulling at his hair, as though he wished to manually pull all of the ideas out of his brain. Also in his manic frame of mind, he will talk a mile a minute and very excitedly because he just has to chare his thoughts with someone. ~When he gets depressed, he avoids people and can even snap at others when they’re merely trying to express concern. This can come off as him being a mean ass hole to people, but it’s something he can’t really help. ~He has a dry cough that comes and goes; evidence of his time spent breathing the dry gas mixture found in a SCUBA tank as well as his smoking the reefer. Secrets: ~His favorite band is the Beach Boys. ~He knows he’s bipolar and he doesn’t want anyone thinking less of him for having the disorder. He refuses to see a doctor about getting it officially diagnosed and treated. A few intuitive students that are around him enough might begin to suspect this from their own logical reasoning. ~During vacations from school, he will go home and sit around on the beach with his other pals drinking and smoking marijuana. When he gets stressed with school, he will sometimes go into town and buy pot off the local kids there. He swears he doesn’t have a drug problem, but he uses the pot to calm him down during his manic fits all the time, like a self-medicating sort of thing. ~He is one of Uncle Mark’s victims, but not to the extent that the pervert molested other kids. However he still wrestles with the issue. Thinking about it will often trigger a mixed episode for him, and therefore leading to the contemplation of suicide. This event is also what triggered his genetic bipolar disorder to flare up, starting a lifelong struggle for him. Strengths: He has a charming smile that he flashes at people while he’s manipulating them and/or the situation. He has a remarkable ability to get his way. He’s a smooth talker and can usually get someone to see the logic and reasoning behind what he says, as long as he’s not manic about it. Weaknesses: ~Spelling and grammar. His personal journal is often filled with typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors. This has the propensity to make him look stupid, and it embarrasses him, but he still forgets to use the spell-check function. This is often the result of his high-speed thought processes during his manic state. His thoughts are running so fast that his fingers and/or lips can’t keep up with him. ~When suffering from a mixed episode, he hides from people and will often contemplate suicide. Should anyone bother him while he is feeling down, he will often respond with anger. Detailed Personality: Upon first meeting Deke, he seems just as normal as the rest of the teenagers that also happen to be wizards. But he runs so much deeper than that. He struggles with manic depression, something he inherited from his mother’s side of the family. He refuses to see a doctor about it and refuses to acknowledge his disorder. He keeps himself convinced that he is as normal as the next kid. But deep down, he knows what is going on and it pains him to know that he’s a ‘freak’ (or so he thinks). He also struggles with having been molested as an 8 year-old child, but that’s something he never lets himself think about. Eventually he’s going to be diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder; predominantly manic, having suffered at least one major depression (which he will deal with after his father dies), and the occasional mixed episode. But from the outside, looking in, Deke appears to be a high-energy, fun kind of guy. His lust-for-life personality comes off as him always being hopped up on sugar. He’s always ready for the next adventure life has to offer, regardless of whether or not he breaks any rules. But sometimes his manic swings can get out of control, and his own medicinal cure for them is to relax near a body of water and smoke a joint. He can be manipulative when he wants to be, especially concerning women. Having essentially grown up in his dad’s dive shop, he was raised around sexy beach bunnies. He watched them and how they interacted with each other and with men. They were always flirting with his married father, with him, with each other; they didn’t discriminate. So Deke picked up a lot of his behaviors from them. He charms his teachers with a sweet, innocent smile, the same shy-looking grin as the one learned off of beach bunnies. This easy-going smile also helps him to gain friendships, though he still keeps them at a bit of a distance, He’s afraid that if he gets too close with someone, they will figure out his disability or his tortured past. Every break from school he gets, he goes back home to Florida to learn as much as he can about his dad’s business. When he’s not at home, his father’s best friend, John Webster, helps Jack run the shop. Deke adores John and is happy with the arrangement. In fact, John is almost like a second father to Deke, and will probably end up filling Jack’s shoes after he passes away. When in his manic phase, his thoughts run away with him. Often times, he will wake up in the middle of the night with a million dollar idea that he absolutely has to share with someone right now. Unfortunately, this means his roommate will catch the brunt of it. His hair sticks out all over the place because he pulls and tugs at it as though he’s trying to physically remove the thoughts from his brain instead of writing them down, or speaking them. He’s constantly inventing new ways to brew potions, or word sequences for spells, though anyone not in a 90-mile-an-hour mania would realize that most of his ideas are either silly or impossible. But he doesn’t care. When manic, he knows he’s right, and he knows he can accomplish the impossible. Also when in his manic state, he can feel this other-worldly existence of himself. It’s almost as if the depressed side of him is another being entirely that lives in an alternate universe. Sometimes Deke thinks that if he looks or reaches out just the right way, he will see or even touch this other version of himself. Of course, this is just a hallucination that can come with severe bouts of mania. Currently he’s dealing with some anger and issues with his father being so sick and the failure of the Wardwell team for the Quodpot cup. Part of him hopes to pick up something in school so he can go home and heal his father, but deep down he knows there not much hope. History His mother was a born witch from the US, but she attended Beaubaxtons School of Magic because her father was in the military and stationed in Europe for much of her life. When she finally returned to the States, it was to settle in Florida with her family until she met a man named Jack Slayton. He was a wizard born and raised in South Florida and running a SCUBA shop just outside of Ft. Lauderdale. Without knowing the other was of a magical background, they fell in love and got married. Before becoming a SCUBA instructor, Jack had attended SAME and married one of his classmates straight out of school. Laura Jane was born a year later, but when Jack expressed his desire to leave the cold of New England to his wife, she smiled and waved good-bye. His ex-wife kept the baby, and Jack went on to pursue a career with his first love: the ocean. He became SCUBA certified and started his own dive school. He met Barbara one warm summer when she wandered into his shop for a new snorkel and fins. She left the store with her snorkel, fins, and a date. Two years later, they were married and expecting a child. A baby boy arrived in mid-April, and they thought it would be cute to name him after one of the original 7 astronauts. After all, they were around in the 60s and 70s when the space program was booming, and what child around then wasn’t swept by the romanticism of the hippies? With their last name being Slayton, it was only natural they would pick the name Deke. They had high hopes for him, and each secretly hoped he would show the same spark to attend a school of magic. Low and behold, the spark was there, otherwise he might not have survived his tree-climbing experience when he was 7. But before he had his little accident, Ethan was born, followed shortly after by Ellie Mae. With 3 years between each of the children, Jack and Barbara hoped there was enough but not too much time between kids, and that they might all grow up together, close and happy. And they were until Deke fell. Suddenly, Ethan Wayne noticed that Deke and the “new” baby were getting all of the attention, which is when all the trouble with him began. Jack and Barbara loved all of their kids equally, but Ethan didn’t feel that they did. So he thought bad attention is better than no attention, right? That was when Ethan Wayne became such a pain in the ass to Deke, and a little obnoxious to his parents. It was sometime while he was wrapped from head to foot in bandages that he also began to show an interest in his father’s SCUBA business. He began spending time down at the shop and started learning bits and pieces of the business. Deke soon developed the same passion for water that his father had. He took up surfing and snorkeling immediately, and began to learn the skills necessary for diving. Growing up in South Florida, he was constantly surrounded by scantily-clad bodies, and women that thought he was the cutest thing ever. Whenever college girls on spring break would wander into the dive shop, Deke would make sure he was there so he could ogle at them. They would ruffle his hair and make some sort of comment, usually something like if only he was older… Unfortunately, sometime just after his eighth birthday, Uncle Mark came to visit. Deke doesn’t like to recall exactly where he was touched and where he was commanded to touch, but he clearly remembers running to his mother and crying in her arms, telling he that Uncle Mark was a bad man. Jack was furious and called the police on him. It later turned out that Deke was not his only victim, about 10 different boys and girls of different ages were able to identify him from a line-up. He was given 35 years in prison with no option for parole. It’s possible that this stressful even in his life is what triggered the reactions necessary for his bipolar disorder to flare up. His mother, though carrying the genetics for it, never suffered from the disease, and instead passed them on to her son. When he turned 12, Deke was invited to attend SAME, and he couldn’t have been more excited. He had always known he was different and didn’t have very many friends at his Florida school, though he had a few close ones that he still keeps in touch with today. But for the most part, he devoted all of his free time and energy to his family, the shop, and the ocean. So it was only natural that when he arrived at SAME, he could smile and joke with the best of them, and the ladies loved him, but he didn’t feel the need to gain any close friendships. He’s been at the Academy now for almost 4 years, and in that time he has proven himself as an able Quodpot player. He’s currently the running back / safety for the Wardwell team. He was very upset with the team’s loss to Bishop for the cup, and has been struggling through a mixed episode. Samples Journal Entry: Jaidev RP Sample: Jaidev and Izzy Misc Plot ideas you think we should know: ~Deke, I’m sure, has an ex or two that is probably still hung up on him, so that could be an open plot. ~At some point, his dad is going to die and he will be torn between finishing his education and returning home to run the dive shop. ~Perhaps he could be discovered during one of his depressed spells fondling a knife, ready to kill himself. ~I am also most willing for him to be discovered smoking pot and tattled on, thus earning himself some discipline.
