"I think Dirk was the one who'd rather have kidnapped her." Anne looked down at her glass, a guarded expression on her face. "I know Dirk wasn't the good hero that his family thought he was. I know the Agency twists people. But murder someone in cold blood? Not Dirk. Never him. John, yes, and enjoy it. Many of the other Agents, they don't care, so long as they have their orders, and their pay-packets.
"But Dirk would have looked for another way to start that war, if that was what was what the Agency wanted. He'd have erased her memories, everything, and set her up with a new life, even if that meant he didn't have a credit to his name by the time he was done, and only the wrist-comp from the Agency to wear. Not perfect, not nice, but better than killing someone he didn't even know."
Or at least, she knew that was one of the things he'd done before. Erased memories for the safety of others, stolen lives for the sake of keeping the timelines straight. And come to her after, looking for comfort to soothe away the pain of choosing the lesser evil, rather than doing what was right because he was afraid of what would happen to him if he did.
