The last thing she remembered was her control panel going out of its mind. Everything had been blinking, blaring, beeping… and the entire cockpit shook. She could forget all the sights and sounds, but the feeling of being scrambled like that was something else. She could still feel it in her toes.
What happened after that? She was split in two. That’s what it felt like, and looked like. River would swear she had seen a ray of light come down and spilt her in half. Then there was darkness.
River decided to change focus on what had happened, to what was happening now. She was fairly certain she was alive. There was pain, so that had to mean she was alive. The belt of the seat was still digging into her shoulders, so she was still in her ship. There was oxygen, since she was breathing, which is where that pain was coming from. She could smell iron, but was it her ship or… no, no she felt the warm dripping hit her ear and falling to her neck. But there was still darkness.
River thought she had her eyes open, but she was so disorientated she wasn’t quite sure. She tried widening them, but there was still darkness. If her eyes were open there would be some light. Some panel switch, or stars. She was out in space, there would be stars. She just couldn’t see any of them.
Raising her arm, which felt exhausted from having been holding onto the armrest for dear life, she felt around for the communication box. Somewhere… there was a switch to… ah! There is it!
“SOS. Pilot 4-2-4-7. Emergency. I’ve been… something. SOS,” she said. There wasn’t a response, not even the sound of feedback or static. She tried again.
“SOS. Pilot 4-2-4-7. Emergency. SOS. Pilot 4-2-4-7. Emergency.”
