When Daniel said he was a jerk, Sam didn't know what to tell him. She knew he was feeling bad about what had happened, and she didn't want to make him feel worse, but at the same time, he really had made things unbelievably complicated. In so many ways. Besides the fact that she was sure she was going to have to deal with the SGC in the morning, there was everything that she was feeling right then and there. Things that were unfair to Carson. Things she had thought she had managed to finally put aside.
"Yeah, it's unfair," she finally told him. "But...not just to me." She knew that there was no way she could have this conversation with him right now in the state he was in.
When he said he'd sleep on the couch, she shook her head. "No way. Come on," she said, pulling him up and leading him over to the bed. Once his shoes and jacket were off, she helped him lay down. "We'll talk in the morning, okay?"
Without even thinking about it, she leaned over and kissed his forehead before waiting with him until she was sure he was asleep. She then got up and left her quarters, not sure what to do. Sighing, she collapsed against the wall and slid to the floor, resting her head to her knees.
"Yours asleep too?" she heard Carson ask as he sat down next to her.
Nodding, she looked over at him. "Definitely did not expect this."
"Me either," he said.
Several moments of silence passed, several different emotion swirling through her, before Sam swallowed. They had to talk about this now because they were going to have to deal with the other two in the morning. "You still love her."
"Aye." He paused. "You still love him."
"Yes," she replied with a nod. She reached up and rubbed the back of her neck. "What are we doing, Carson?"
"We were trying to move on. And bloody well kidding ourselves."
That caused her lip to tug into a partial smile. "I didn't expect you to propose, you know."
"I didn't expect to propose. Why do you think I didn't have a ring?" He shook his head. "Maybe them coming through was a good thing."
"Don't think Landry is going to see it that way, but I'll figure out something to tell them." She reached over and took Carson's hand, giving it a squeeze. "Go take care of your girl."
He gave her a smile and stood. "He obviously still loves you a lot too," he told her.
"I know."
Once Carson had gone back into his quarters, Sam stood up and stretched before heading into hers. Daniel was going to be out of it until morning, so she changed into her pajamas, took her hair out of its ponytail and curled up on the couch under a light blanket, her eyes on him. She would have thought that she would be running their break-up over and over in her head, but instead, she found herself thinking about the day they had made the snowman together.
That had been the day she had realized she had never loved anyone as much as she loved Daniel. And that thought was still in her head as she fell asleep
