When they arrived at Offutt, John looked around as Major Watkins led them out toward the hanger. One of his earliest assignments following flight training had been there as part of the command and control squadron. It was a bit strange to be back after so long, especially considering where they had been living for the last few years. At the time he had been here before, he had been married to Nancy and no idea that it would ever be possible to go to other planets, much less galaxies.
Now, he knew. He was where he was supposed to be with Fred and their children.
Squeezing her hand, he stopped as they walked into the hanger where the Artemis class flyer was sitting. He let out a low whistle, impressed by what he saw. "That is pretty damn snazzy," he said as they walked closer. Even more so since Fred's research had helped to create it. Looking over at his wife, he smiled with pride. Having flyers like these would be a huge asset to the Daedalus and Apollo, he knew. "So these are good for atmospheric flight as well as outer space?"
"Yes," Watkins said. "Given what's been said about the...nature of some of the fights, it was felt they should be as adaptable as possible."
John nodded. "Then I would love to try it out."
After being given a flight suit, John was soon settled into the cockpit of the flyer. He looked at Fred with a grin and flashed her a thumbs up before opening his intercom channel. This is so cool, he told her. My wife is a genius.
"Colonel Sheppard, you are clear to taxi for take-off."
