John was actually glad to get out of his mission BDUs and into his civvies, putting on a set of light khakis and a short sleeve button-up shirt. After he had his shoes on, he went with Fred and Alex to pick up some food for their picnic then headed for the jumper. Seeing Alex so excited - in such stark contrast to the Alex from the other universe - made him smile, especially when she started up the jumper.
"I guess I'm going to have my hands full teaching the kids how to fly," he said with a laugh as he flew them over the water to the cove.
It didn't take them long to get there, and soon, John was stretched on the blanket with his family, enjoying the sun and lunch. He smiled at Fred when she leaned over to kiss him.
Most times, I think I should be the one thanking you, he told her. Reaching up, he caressed her face. "I love you."
Suddenly, he noticed that Alex was poking Fred's stomach with her sandwich and raised his eyebrows. "Alex, pumpkin? What're you doing?"
"Feed baby!" she said.
"Oh really?" he asked before breaking into a fit of laughter. When Alex pouted at him, he reached over and picked her up, sitting her in his lap. "I'm sure your brother appreciates the gesture, but he's getting enough food from your mommy."
Alex looked up at him then over at Fred. "How?"
Snorting, he shook his head and looked at his wife. "This is the universe getting back at us for being curious as kids, isn't it?"
