"I think I rather eat here so I can spend some more time with the both of you," Fred told them before they got off the couch and went into the small kitchen to make some sandwiches.
The next few days was a blur of activity, especially in the science departments. Jeannie, Rodney and Sam busied themselves with getting everything ready to build the bridge. It wasn't something that could be done overnight and it was going to take some time but Rodney and Jeannie were able to put aside their differences and get the main part of the project finished. All they needed to do was get everything ready to bridge the two universes.
Fred had spent the majority of her time with the machine. Elizabeth, who was getting better, came down to the lab a few times to help. Fred saw a big difference between this Elizabeth and the one she'd known before - this Elizabeth seemed to laugh more and be more laid back. Even though she hated to admit it, but Fred really enjoyed being around this Elizabeth more.
It'd been a long day and Fred found herself sitting in the lab, staring at the machine. Nothing she tried seemed to work with killing the parasite. She'd checked all the ancient databases, at least ten times, and none of them were a help. She was about to pick up her chair and break the damn thing when Daniel came in.
"I think I might've found something, Fred," he said as he helped up his tablet. "I was looking in the room where this machine came from and there was some writing on the wall. According to it, these parasites were made by the Ancients as a way of controlling the 'trouble makers'. They would infect them so they could better control them. A little cruel if you ask me. Anyway, the parasites eventually evolved and got a mind of their own. They killed several Ancients before they were banished from the city."
Fred found herself amazed and a little pissed at the same time. The Ancients sure were full of themselves. "Any idea of how to fix the machine?" she asked.
"I'm glad you asked," Daniel said with a grin. "According to this, there's a switch inside the machine that should solve your problem."
Smiling, Fred got up and looked at the machine. "Lets take it apart then," she said as she moved over to it with Daniel and started to take the machine apart.
