Hitching the baby higher so he wouldn't drop her, John glanced back at Fred when she asked about the anal probe. Had they been kidnapped? He knew something about the fact that if you traveled in space, you'd end up aging because of the time it took. Had they all been taken and been away for a long time? But that didn't explain the fact that he and Fred were apparently married with a daughter, or that the man and woman - the aliens - standing in front of them were treating them like they were...friends.
As Teyla explained to them who they were - or more precisely, what they had become - John's jaw almost dropped in shock. He had joined the military? He had always said he wouldn't even though he wanted to be a pilot. Why would he have changed his mind? He wanted to ask more questions, but the others started talking instead.
Finally, he managed to jump in. "Ronon. We're married? Fred and me? And this our daughter?"
He nodded. "You've been married for over a year now. And your daughter's name is Alex."
"Alex," John repeated, looking down at the baby. "Hi, Alex."
He was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, married to a scientist, and the two of them had a daughter. They were living in another galaxy. How had all this happened?
Then he heard Fred talking about her parents before Teyla left, saying she was going to go speak to her father. When Fred said she wanted to go home, upset obvious in her voice, he turned around. "I'm...I'm sure they know where you are," he said. "If all this is true, then they probably know since we're all, you know, older. Right, Ronon?"
The other man didn't answer, and John felt a surge protectiveness for Fred rush through him. He glared at him, trying to remember how his father had dealt with subordinates.
"What aren't you telling us?" John asked.
"Nothing that I shouldn't tell you. It's best to wait until Teyla finds out what's going on."
Sighing, John looked back at Fred. He found himself shifting Alex to one arm and reaching out to touch her face. "Are...are you going to be all right?" he asked.
