Fred continued to push, glad that her husband was there to support her. There was a brief moment she thought she couldn't push anymore but with John's encouragement, she was able to push one more time. When she heard her daughter's cries fill the room, Fred fell back a little and started to cry herself when she saw their baby.
"Hello, little one," she whispered as Carson placed Alex on her chest. Fred turned and looked at John. "I love you so much."
Carson busied himself with tying off the umbilical cord and then held out a pair of scissors. "Do you want the honors, dad?" he asked with a grin.
Once the cord had been cut, Carson took Alex over to clean her up a bit more. He then turned and looked at John. "I'm going to finish cleaning Alex up and take care of Fred's afterbirth. We set up a room just off medical and once I'm finished here, I'll take the both of them over there," he said. "There are some people outside waiting for the news. Why don't you go tell them and I'll take care of Fred and move her to the room."
It didn't take long for Carson to finish things up and soon Fred was resting in the other room. Since they didn't have a maternity ward, Carson had allowed Alex to stay in the same room as her mother. Once she was wrapped up in a blanket, Carson handed the newborn to Fred and said he would send Jennifer in later to show her how to feed the infant.
With Alex in her arms, Fred smiled and looked down at the baby. "Hi, Alex. Welcome to the universe, sweetie," she quietly said.
