Fred shook her head. "I'm fine. I just need you," she whispered as she continued to cling to John. She was scared and hoped she did all of this right. None of the baby books really went into a lot of detail about the birthing process. Most of the books read as instruction manuals and weren't any help at the moment.
When Carson came back into the room, he gave Fred some pain medicine through her IV. He checked her again and nodded. "I'll be back in about ten minutes to check on you. Rodney's awake and he's okay," he said before leaving again.
Fred thanked him and then looked at John. "We're going to have to have a chat with Alex after she's born. Coming early and making my water break in the middle of the lab," she said with a soft laugh. Just then, another contraction hit. Even though Carson had gave her some medicine, it still hurt a bit. She clung onto John and gritted her teeth through the pain.
After ten minutes, Carson returned as promised. He checked her again and laughed a little. "It seems Alex doesn't want to wait to be born. She's crowning already. I think this may be the shortest labor I've helped with," he said before he started to set a few things up.
"That's not bad, is it?" Fred asked with a worried look.
"Not at all," Carson said before he positioned himself at the end of the bed. "All right now. John, I want you to help Fred sit up and hold her there as she pushes. Fred, I want you to push with your next contraction."
With some help from John, Fred sat up a little and leaned back against her husband. She turned her head and smiled at him. "I love you," she whispered right before a contraction hit. She bore down and pushed.
