Fred wanted their daughters to stay. She wanted to ask them questions about their lives so she would know if she was a good mother or not. Obviously, both John and her were good parents, but she still worried. But deep down, she knew it was impossible. They were already risking so much having them there. One was never to know the future, no matter how badly it turned out. She was just glad Alex had came and stopped them from dying.
Reaching down, Fred took Alex's hand and walked to the Gate room with her family. After Alex had handed the paper to the tech, all of them looked down as the Gate activated.
"Why don't we let them have some time alone," Carter suggested.
With her hand still in Alex's, Fred walked down to where the Gate was shimmering. She turned and looked down at her daughter. "Have a safe trip home," she said before she pulled Alex into a tight hug.
"We will," Alex whispered as Meredith said goodbye to John.
After John had set Meredith down, the little girl wrapped her arms around Fred. "I love you, mommy," she said.
"I love you, too. Be safe," Fred whispered.
Once they'd said their goodbyes, Alex took Meredith's hand and started toward the Gate. Before they went through, they stopped and looked at their parents again before waving goodbye. Soon they were through the Gate and gone. Fred stared at the empty ring as tears came to her eyes. She knew in a few months she would be holding Alex in her arms, and in a few years, she would have Meredith, but it still hurt a little.
Turning, she looked at her husband and pulled him into a tight hug. There was so much she wanted to say. Their daughters were amazing but at the moment, she could find the right words so she stood there and held her husband as tightly as she possibly could.
