He tried desperately to keep himself steady as he stood by Cait in the operating room. Lee had refused to let him even think about performing the surgery, and he was glad for that - he wasn't sure he could have kept his wits about him. This was his wife. His son. He could feel Rodney's worry and grief, and he didn't have enough presence of mind to block him. The last thing he would be able to do was operate.
But there was no way he was going leave Cait's side.
It seemed like the minutes stretched on into eternity as they opened Cait up to get Shaun out. Looking up, he saw his husband, lover, father-in-law, brother-in-law and friends up there. He wanted to tell them everything would be okay, but once they had Shaun out, he could see the look on Lee's face. Even under the mask. He had been in enough operating rooms and surgeries in his time to know.
As the nurse took Shaun to get him into an incubator, Carson went up the observation room to talk to them.
"She's lost a lot of blood. Doctor Lee's doing her best, but...even with a transfusion, it might not be enough," he said, his eyes tearing up. "I...oh God."
Kade looked at Rodney and then over at Carson before turning his head to gaze at Cait. "Transfuse my blood to her," he said.
Carson lifted his head, staring at their lover. "Kade...are...you said..."
"Extraordinary circumstances. This is Cait's life. You know what this will mean, but it's the only way."
He knew. And he knew it was the only way to save Cait. Reaching out, he took Kade's hand, and together, they went down to the operating room so they could start the transfusion.
