Sam had wanted to wrap her arms around her husband and just hold him tightly though all this, but she knew that she had to stay collected for the sake of everyone else. So instead when Daniel squeezed her hand, she squeezed it back, nodding when she sensed his thought to her.
I know, she told him. I love you. Be careful.
After they had left, she turned and walked over to Chuck. She knew that they couldn't do anything until they were able to visually confirm things where the debris had hit.
"Do we have any readings from the city scanners that could tell us what happened?" she asked quietly.
Chuck looked up at her. "We might. I'll have to do some looking around in the files."
She nodded. "Do it."
Just then, Ronon came charging into Operations and up the stairs into the Control Room with an obviously winded Carson on his heels. The look in Ronon's eyes was wild.
"What's going on?" he asked. "Where's my wife? Have you found her?"
"Ronon, we're still trying to find out if they could have--."
Before she could finish, Daniel's voice came over her headset, telling her the news, and Sam felt her eyes start to sting with tears as her throat began to ache mercilessly.
"Yes," she said to her husband, her voice strained. "Tell Lorne and Rodney to as well."
Taking a deep breath, she looked at Ronon. "I'm sorry, Ronon. They just confirmed. Jennifer couldn't have survived."
"I'm going out there!" Ronon yelled, pivoting around to head for the flight bay.
"Ronon, there's nothing left," Sam said as she hurried to catch up with him on the stairs. Both she and Carson caught his arms, and even though they both knew he could easily push them off if he wanted, it was enough to stop him. "They wouldn't have given up if there was any hope of finding her."
Suddenly, Ronon sat down heavily on the steps, and for the first time that Sam could remember since she had met him, she saw tears in his eyes. A moment later, he let out a howl and buried his face in his hands.
