Not in a bad way but in a hey-that's-different kind of way. He liked it. Back up in the Ark, all the kids had taken Earth class in school so he knew what grass and trees and plants were supposed to smell like but there was a significant difference between what had been up there and what was down here. The air definitely had something to do with it.
He stood in the middle of a clearing and breathed in deep. As far as he knew, as far as any of them knew, the air could be toxic and undoubtedly kill them. So far though, none of them had dropped dead. A few hadn't made the fall from space but he was surprised that as many of them had survived, considering how fucking old the drop ship was in the first place. That then begged the question, had they actually been expected to make it?
There had been rumors that the Ark was running out of air. That was the reason they'd been dropped. So that the rest of the population could survive. Of course, if air was running out, this wasn't going to be a permanent solution. All the fuckers did up there was buy themselves more time.
Was he bitter? Maybe a little. Sure, it was his own fault for getting his dumb ass into trouble again but did his crime warrant a kick down to Earth?
Then again, there was something freeing about the endless horizon. And terrifying.
Behind him, everyone else was doing their own thing. Literally. There were no rules. There were a couple of kids who were trying to get a group together to look for food and build a camp. A few bossy ones were putting themselves in charge. No surprise who it was to him. Upperclass kids like them were always the first to come forward and try to take charge. Usually he didn't socialize with them but since they were all in the same situation here, he might as well try to help.
Turning away from his quiet spot, he walked back into the make-shift camp, which was really just a bunch of crap that everyone had pulled out of the drop ship and piled in a circle, and walked toward the small group that was trying to figure out where to go looking for food. The tall blonde had a map in his hand and mentioned a place by the name of Mount Weather that was supposed to have supplies. A girl with red-hair, who was always around the blonde, brought up that THAT was where they were supposed to be dropped. Not in the middle of this forest. They asked if anyone else wanted to join in and make the walk over to check it out and when no one else threw up their hand, Jim stepped up and with a shrug- "I'll go."
