    "Up!" little Jamie demanded in an imperious voice. He held his chubby arms in the air. "Up-up!"

    Orlando grinned and said, "Yes, Master Jamie. Climb up on the fence so I can reach you."

    Master Jamie Neeson, at age three, was just as much of a brave little monkey as Orlando'd ever been. He scrambled up and climbed the fence slats like a ladder, then leaned against the top rail while standing on the second and held his arms up again.

    At some point, I'm going to be starting another Keptverse series, and I started wondering....what happens when a master dies? Presumably, you can will your slaves to your heirs, but until the estate is settled, would Commerce want someone in the household to make sure no one tries to run? What do people think?

    ETA: To be more specific:

    Lord X has been ill for several years, and has been comatose for the past few months. His breathing and heart rate suddenly become very erratic, so his Agent calls the doctor. About two hours later, the monitor flatlines. It's 3 am. What happens next?

    "Oh, man, I am completely wasted!" Mark Vincent was sprawled in a velvet-upholstered loveseat, upstairs in a private lounge at his flagship club, xXx. He had a golden touch for that sort of entertainment business and by his late twenties he'd made enough money to start looking around for investments. He and Liam had been introduced at a weekend party, and had partnered on some profitable ventures over the years, and eventually become good friends despite their sharply contrasting backgrounds.

    Vincent had a loud, raucous personality, but there was a sharp brain in his shaved head and he was a good man to have on one's side in just about any conflict.

    For the purposes of this story, Damian Lewis was born in the Empire.

    This story was written to explore some ideas I had about what life might be like for the corps of slaves who work for Commerce as well as wondering what sort of secret police the Empire might have. The Bureau of Industry and Security is a division of the Commerce Department created after 9/11. Obviously there's a been a bit of "mission creep" since then and now.

    Influences on this story include: James Ellroy's LA Quartet, The Shield, Gorky Park, the Imperial So'jin (from Jordan's Wheel of Time), and there is an out and out homage to Piers Anthony's Bio of a Space Tyrant.

    I've been keeping a running tally on questions for the Kept verse, because this universe gets me all thinky. I'm honestly interested in discussion, and heck, if any of these concepts inspires someone to write more fic -- awesome! ;)

    At least one of them has been answered in fic, but the majority haven't. And for the first one, I'm debating writing a fic to explore that possibility, but haven't had the time yet...(story of my life...)

    - There is no manumission, but is there allowance for someone who is enslaved wrongly? - incorrect debt, identity theft, legal case in appeal?

    Fic: A Lost Boy -- Turf Battles

    Okay, so I was going along, minding my own business and writing a [Nine Years Ago] scene for Chapter Nine of "A Lost Boy," when suddenly this novelette jumped out of hiding and ambushed me. [laugh/flail] It was way too big to use in the main story, but I wanted to write it anyway so I pulled it out and finished it as a stand-mostly-alone. Enjoy!

    Summary: Master Liam gets married. Mistress Natasha isn't bad on her own, but she dotes on her "sweet Chaddie," who's a spoiled, manipulative little prick. Troubles ensue.

    Orlando straightened his master's bow tie while Johnny ran a brush over the back of his jacket, apparently determined to get every molecule of dust or lint off of it before they sent Master Liam off to his wedding.

    After another minute or so of fussing, adjusting his carnation and the crease in his trousers, and the Master finally detached himself from his fussing slaves. He gave both of them a big grin and a jaunty wave, then turned and headed out, leaving Orlando and Johnny alone in the bedroom to clean up.

    The room was silent for a few seconds, and the two of them just stared at each other.

    "What do you think?" Orlando asked. "I mean, is it going to be weird?"

    [Eight Years Ago]

    Master Liam reached down a hand toward Orlando, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor next to him. The hand was empty, so he wanted something. Orlando'd been paying attention to the dinner meeting going on around the table, so he knew his master wanted the dossier on Mr. Taylor, the man the opposition was pushing for Chairman of the Board of SilicaSystems. Orlando slid it out of the perfectly organized briefcase, which was perched on his lap, and put it into his master's hand. The meeting flowed on, punctuated by the clink of silverware on china and the occasional dull tap of fine crystal on the tablecloth when someone put down a glass.

    The next time his master's hand reached down, it had a fork in it with a chunk of rare steak. Orlando leaned forward and took the bite of meat, chewing while he sorted through the pages of SilicaSystems' corporate charter, looking for a clause he remembered from one of their prep sessions.

    Hi everyone! I just got back from out of town and I'm trying to catch up on all the AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL stuff y'all have gotten up to while I was gone.

    I have updated the master post with everything I saw (except for [info]angiepen's latest chapter, because she posted that as I was writing this). Feel free to check it and let me know if I missed something. Things that are clearly indicated as WIPs have been given their own section, one-shot fics have been lumped together. I will start working on getting everything moved into memories as well, since I don't know that I'll have the stamina or the gumption to keep everything up to date in the master list. I'd also like to begin tagging. At least with a simple "fanfic", "meta", "picspam", etc. type tagging. Please feel free to start that now. *g*

    I'd also like to state that, although [info]darkrosetiger and I have tried to keep the universe as open and flexible as possible, we are agreed that we'd like to keep the universe an RPF (Real Person Fiction) universe and not include fictional characters. We felt that would just muddy the waters too much. Obviously, you all are free to write whatever you like in your own journals, but please keep the comm stuff to RPF only.

    [Twenty-Two Years Ago]

    The run-down house was filled with aging pizza boxes, scattered textbooks and the occasional stained and smudged bong. What it didn't have was air conditioning, and Marton was wondering for the millionth time why he'd agreed to move in with Nick.

    Not that the dorms had been all that great either. At least at the house he had his own room, with a door that locked. And Nick was pretty cool, with a lot of friends, and being invited was sort of flattering.

    Of course it was those very friends who were driving him nuts just then, because half a dozen of them had come over with beer and a set of smudged pamphlets and would not stop blathering no matter how late it got. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd been talking about anything interesting, or useful, or even realistic. But no, it turned out that this particular little group of friends gathered around Nick Cage were fucking abolitionists and that night they were arguing on and on over the best way to "bust out" slaves and give them regular, free lives.

    I'm terribly sorry, I screwed up. Misbegotten was a Fictional Person Fic and the AKB universe involves Real Person Fic only. I don't know how I missed that but I did.
