Name:What_Fantastic
About:We respect traditional science fiction and fantasy--really, we do. But we have a few questions.

Concerned fantasy writers, readers, and artists want to know:

o Why must elves and dwarves always be at war?
o Fantasy worlds and ecosystems: do they have them?
o Ditto economies.
o What do the farmers do when they're not raising heirs to the throne? (Besides being murdered by the Dark Lord and having their farms razed to the ground.)
o On the subject of Dark Lords--can they do anything right? Are they even necessary?
o Are we ever going to meet beasts that aren't knock-offs of the Tolkien bestiary or Greek mythology?

Sci-fi readers would also like to know:

o Who funds all of those voyages to other planets? Who's writing grants for this?
o Sexy aliens: how does an ordinary human attract them? Once one attracts them, what does one do if the plumbing is (logically) alien?
o Plumbing. Do spaceships have it?
o Does sci-fi really have to take place in outer space, anyway? Or the future?

But most of all:

o Is there more to the fantasy and sci-fi genres than a bunch of hackneyed stereotypes and clichés?

If you would like to challenge the fantasy/sci-fi paradigm--exploring the lives of ordinary residents of the fantasy or sci-fi world, taking the genre to Earth and letting it run free, parodying stereotypes or chasing them to their logical conclusions, or creating a fantasy/sci-fi world low on the fireworks and high on the craftsmanship--then this may be the community for you. If you have a totally different way of re-conceptualizing the fantasy and sci-fi genres, beyond these suggestions, then this is definitely the community for you. We encourage you to post art, fiction (long or short), poetry, plot bunnies, recommendations, and meta here.
