This was ridiculous. As far as Locke was concerned they were all better off without the memories. He wasn’t sure why he felt that way. He didn’t know what it was about his own life that made him want to forget who or what he was but something deep within him revelled in this newfound freedom. He had remained close to the center of town since the necklace had been found and had watched as, one by one, various residents had wandered up towards it and attempted to smash the damn thing. Each time they failed he had smiled to himself just a little but refrained from making any sort of comment. He didn’t remember much about Wanda but he knew enough to guess that she was incredibly powerful and that pissing her off probably wasn’t the smartest idea.
Lounging in a spot of early morning sunlight, Locke watched in bareles hidden excitement as one of the last residents in town strode up to the necklace and hit it several times with the hammer that had been left. After several more strong hits they finally gave up and began to walk away, posture one of defeat. Whatever magic there was surrounding the trinket was powerful, indeed. An entire town’s worth of people, each with their own hidden talents, had tried and failed.
“Well.” Locke said as he got up off the grass and stretched his arms above his head. “Looks like it’s time for us to face facts. Our memories, our pasts are gone. For good. We should start living again, figuring out who we want to be instead of worrying over who we were. Like I suggested. This entire thing was pointless.”
Beside Wanda, one of her fair haired twins gave him a look. The boy had seemed distrustful of him from the start. Locke didn’t know why but he wasn’t all that offended by it either. “Not everyone in town has tried.” He said, still glaring at Locke. “And mom never agreed to stop trying to find a way to fix things. I don’t remember seeing you lift that hammer and take a swing.” He said. The boy smiled when Locke’s attention moved back towards the hammer. He opened his mouth to speak but was cut off. “Try it. If nothing happens… maybe you’re right. Maybe I’ll talk mom into accepting things and moving on. Pretty sure you’ll have a better chance with me on your side.”
Locke narrowed his eyes but the boy possibly had a point. Either that or the challenge in his eyes was too grating to be ignored. He couldn’t decide. Whatever the real reason Locke found himself willing to take the bait. “You had better keep your word once it doesn’t break.” Locked huffed as he strode towards the necklace and the hammer left by the blacksmith. Westview’s most powerful had tried and failed to break the thing. There was no chance he would be the one to do it. Locked picked up the hammer and, after careful consideration, simply tapped the necklace with it. The boy had never said he’d had to actually try to break it and it was better to be safe than sorry. Such a light tap would never…
Locke’s eyes widened in horror as cracks began to form upon the gemstone, brilliant light spilling from within them, and quickly spread throughout it. “No…” He murmured, dropping the hammer. “No, no, no…” It was too late. The damage was done and, within moments, the necklace and the spell was broken. Locke lurched as if jolting awake from a dream, his memories returned. He turned to shoot a glare at Tommy who shot him a smug little smile. How was it the Maximoff twins were always getting the best of him in this place?
