Jane splashed another handful of cold water on her face before she looked at herself in the mirror. She knew Danny worried about her, which was rather endearing in its own way, and she wanted to give him as little cause to do so as possible. That was going to be difficult, considering the dark, sleep deprived, bags under her eyes and the small amount of weight she'd lost. Jane sighed. This place was insanity and, considering the world where she was from, that was saying something. Storybrooke wasn't bad though, not by any stretch of the imagination. It was quiet and, despite the chaos, Jane hadn't had to lift a gun or her biotics once in defense of anyone or anything. She couldn't deny that was nice, even if it did leave her at a loss as to what to do. It hadn't been so bad when Liara, Garrus, and Tali had shown up, but they were gone now. Now it was just Jane and Jane wasn't doing so well. It was why she was actually excited to see Danny. The kid was good people, even if she felt a little strange about how well she knew him. He was her friend and she needed those at the moment. Sure, she could have called Sam, or maybe even Alex, but that wasn't what she wanted at the moment. She wanted a quiet sit down, something in her stomach, and to check in on one of her friends. It was something simple, something that made her feel like herself again. It was why she'd donned the uniform, why she took the time to adjust her hair and put on the appearance that was Commander Jane Shepard. Clean uniform, even folds, straight button line, tight laced boots, and regulation haircut. It was something that would force her to be herself, and that was something Jane very much felt like she was missing. It was the thing that sent her jogging down the stairs, keeping her breath even and calm. It was the thing that made her smile as she pushed out the door and began looking for her friend. She was Commander Jane Shepard, who just so happened to be a very hard woman to keep down. |
