Neal still had a hard time sleeping. After everything that had happened, being betrayed by Tamara and then finding out that she had taken Henry to Neverland - that his son had been trapped in that awful place - tore at old wounds. His dreams were filled with memories of his own time there, and it was only Emma's presence and the knowledge that Henry needed him that kept him from giving in to the desire to run away from all of this. Well, that and the magic barrier around the town. He hated that his son had been forced to suffer the way he had. He would have given anything to spare Henry the experience. But what was done couldn't simply be undone. Nothing was ever that easy. All he could do was be there and hope he could find some way to make things easier for his son.
It was early, too early to be awake, but Neal couldn't stay asleep. He'd tried, but rest evaded him and all he could do was lay on his side and stare at the dark of the pre-dawn sky. Staring at Emma was a much better use of his time, so he was watching his girlfriend sleep with a fond expression on his face. Neither of them had been affected so far by the magic that seemed to be swapping people's sex, and it was nice seeing Emma as herself. She was so beautiful when she was sleeping. She was always beautiful, but there was something so calm and peaceful about her when she wasn't awake, as if the worries of the world had been washed away. It made him wish that he had been strong enough to fight for her, instead of letting fear get the best of her. He knew letting her go had been a necessity, but he could have gone after her when the curse broke, instead of hiding in New York like a coward. But now they had this second chance, and he wanted to hold on to it with both hands. He was still watching, when he saw Emma's eyes fluttering. Instead of backing away to seem less like a creeper, he continued watching her, bringing a hand up to touch the side of her face. His mouth opened to say good morning or to ask how she slept, but instead what came out was, "Marry me."
