Rose was nothing if not stubborn. She lifted her chin in defiance, convinced that this was a ploy to get her off her guard. Sure, she wanted to believe it was really her Dmitri, but she couldn't let her guard down, not even for a second.
But she couldn't help glancing at his eyes, which were the same chocolate brown she remembered. Rose faltered a little, but she didn't drop her guard completely.
"No, this is a trick. It has to be a trick." Maybe she should have guessed that he was from a different time, but she and Lissa had come from the same point and it didn't even occur to her that he could be different. Maybe the ghosts had been wrong. Maybe he hadn't been turned after all. More likely, though, she thought, he'd just found a way to change his eye color. To trick her. And she wasn't going to fall for it.
