WHO: Meredith & Cristina
WHERE: Their apartment
WHEN: Mid-August
WHAT: Meredith got a dog
RATING: PG13; language
STATUS: log; complete.
Cristina opened the door of the apartment to find herself immediately attacked by a ball of fluff. “Get off me you stupid mutt,” she muttered, trying to detach the dog from her leg. “Oh all right...” she bent down and scratched him behind the ears. “Don’t tell Mere I did that. I’m supposed to not like you.” With Doc in tow, she went into the kitchen and pulled a beer out of the refrigerator. “Wonder what would happen if I gave you beer?” she said to the dog who looked up at her expectantly.
“Hey Mere, you home?” she called out as she wandered into the living room and flopped down on the couch. “I found the hospital. It’s decent looking. The HR people said we should both show up tomorrow.” Cristina kicked off her shoes and put her feet on the coffee table. “if you’re not home, I just yelled in an empty apartment but what the hell.”
Meredith had been in her bedroom when Cristina came in. They had ended up moving “magically” and she was making sure she had all the things she had gotten in the first couple days of her arrival, which wasn’t much. “Well, you took a chance,” Meredith said as she walked out of her bedroom to sit on the couch.
“Show up tomorrow. Got it. I suppose they will give us all the information we need tomorrow when we meet with them.” Meredith wanted to get to work. She had just passed boards back home and she was ready to be an attending general surgeon. “How big is it compared to Seattle Grace?” Meredith asked when Doc came up to her. She petted him and scratched him behind the ear. So far, he wasn’t evil like other Doc.
It still felt strange to Cristina that Meredith has lived through some things she had yet to experience. Like the fact that she was ready to be an attending while technically Cristina was still a resident but here all bets were off as far as she could tell. A doctor was a doctor. “It’s not that big,” she said, taking a sip of her beer and crossing her ankles. “Probably about two or three hundred beds? Someone in the office there said they’d have to expand if people kept showing up though. More people in town means more people getting sick and stuff.” She would have been much happier if the hospital was bigger but beggars couldn’t be choosers.
“Here’s hoping that more people show up, if we are truly stuck here for the rest of our lives. Although, the more people, I somewhat doubt there will be a rise in surgeries.” Learning how large of a hospital was here and how small the town truly was in comparison to living in Seattle, Meredith wasn’t sure she’d have a lot of work to do. Sure, there were bound to be emergency surgeries every once in awhile, but most likely the ones she’d get would be elective.
Doc jumped up next to Meredith, laying his head on her lap. She scratched him behind the ears. “I’d really rather be able to go home. It hardly makes any sense that you and I come from different times. You should be an attending like me, not a resident. Are you going to finish residency here?” Meredith was curious if this place would allow Cristina to be an attending like her.
“I don’t think they have a teaching program to be honest,” she said. “the place didn’t seem that big to me. I can practice surgery now, just technically not without supervision but they don’t have to know that. Besides I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of big stuff to do. Not anything fun.” Fun to Cristina meant cardiac trauma, ruptured aneurysms, and lots of blood. “I have a feeling we’ll be hanging out in the ER a lot. That can be fun but you know how dull it gets sometimes. I know what you mean about wanting to go home. It’d be nice if we had a choice at least. Even if I sort of like being here where I don’t have to think about Owen.” They had broken up just before what was supposed to be Meredith and Derek’s wedding but ended up being Alex and Izzie’s. Right before she’d found herself in Storybrooke. Their relationship was complicated to say the least and part of Cristina was relieved that he wasn’t here.
Meredith smiled and she shook her head. “No, most likely not. You are a gifted surgeon and if I needed heart surgery, I know you can pull it off without a problem and without supervision.” Of course, Meredith knew Cristina could do heart surgery on her own. She’d performed surgery on her husband after he’d been shot without supervision. “I’m sure the ER will get rearranged quite a lot if we have nothing to do. If Zola was here and if they have a daycare, I’d probably spend all my free time there.” Meredith liked being here too, somewhat. “I wish Derek and Zola were here. I love that you are here, but it’d make this place better if they were here too. I hope that Owen doesn’t show up here from like about the same time as me. That’d be awkward, I’m sure.”
Cristina snorted. “From what you’ve told me, I hope he doesn’t either. I might stab him with something and end up in jail.” She shook her head. “I mean I know that from the point I come from, I was starting to realize I loved him but hearing what happens later, I can’t believe I let someone try to turn me into something I wasn’t again. I should have learned that lesson after Burke dumped me at the altar. Maybe I’m more fucked up than I think I am.”
Meredith shook her head. “You are not more fucked up than you think you are. You are just right Cristina and things happen and circumstances change. At least here, you can have happiness. Maybe find that perfect guy for you. And that guy will love you for who you are and not have you change or do anything you don’t want to do.”
“You are a hopeless romantic, Meredith Grey, even if you want to pretend you’re all dark and twisty,” Cristina rolled her eyes at her friend. “and hell who knows, maybe there is a guy out there who’s willing to put up with my shit. If there is, he’s a freaking saint. Or nuts.”
“I think having a child changed all that.” Okay she didn’t actually give birth to Zola, but having Zola in her life had changed Meredith. “I’m sure I can tap into the dark and twisty here. We should go to that pirate bar and have some drinks. Also, your dream guy is probably nuts.”
“A pirate bar. Sounds like a winner to me,” She snorted. “Yeah I’m gonna with my dream guy is nuts too. So what do you say? Let’s go check out the pirate bar. Maybe Captain Jack Sparrow is there, that would be pretty awesome.”
