Kitty wasn't entirely sure how this had happened. She wasn't the type of person to rush into things with guys, not any more anyway. Sure, when she was younger it had been all she'd known how to do, flinging herself into being in love with Piotr, then into the string of ill-fated relationships that had followed. But she had grown up since then. She had responsibilities, and she wasn't that girl any more. Romance was off the table, as far as Kitty was concerned. She needed to focus on her work and deal with everything that entailed, not complicated her life further. So, in all honesty, she probably should have canceled on Derek after seeing what he had said to his friend. It was a complication she probably didn't need right now.
But he was nice. And, to be frank and a little shallow, he was pretty ridiculously good looking. And the amount of concern he had for his sister and the other teenagers from his world was pretty sweet. He genuinely seemed to care. So, all in all, she definitely wasn't opposed to the idea that Derek was flirting with her. It was honestly kind of nice, to just have a guy who wasn't interested without any agenda. And, from what he'd told her about his own experiences, she empathized with his bad luck. So she was more than willing to give him a chance. Plus, and this really did bear repeating, Derek was incredibly attractive. Seriously, she was pretty sure his jawline was illegal, and he looked like the sort of guy who had abs that shouldn't exist outside Photoshop. Who wouldn't want to hang around for a couple hours with a view like that?
The Rabbit Hole wasn't exactly a place she'd go all the time, but having Logan around meant she'd spent more than a little time there. So there were perks to being friends with a grumpy, alcoholic Canadian. She settled herself by the bar, taking off her jacket and considering the options. Drinking with Logan and Pete over the years, she wasn't one for the more watered-down light beers, and her orders tended to surprise people. She saw they had a darker lager on draft and figured it would be a safe bet, but she'd wait until Derek got there before ordering anything. She leaned against the bar while she waited him to show up, looking around idly as she did. She knew this place wasn't exactly the best, but she was also more than capable of handling herself if it came down to it. Besides, she had a feeling it had toned down at least a little with all the non-locals around.
