Who: Angel & Sam Winchester What: night patrolling & getting to know each other When: at night. a little while back. Where: behind the second tower --> elsewhere Warnings: likely none, aside from whatever they talk about.
Patrols were not a concept that Sam was used to. Stakeouts, sure, and tracking, but just walking around looking for potential trouble wasn't something he did often. He usually found trouble through other means, like newspapers or the internet or word of mouth. And there was a reason for that: patrolling looked suspicious. It didn't fit with keeping a low profile, but he was having more and more trouble with that lately.
Not because he wanted to hunt, because he didn't. He was beyond exhausted with hunting and the terrible toll it took on the lives of the people around him. Sam was more than fine with just sitting back and relaxing in a place where he not only didn't have to hunt, but where he was explicitly forbidden from doing so. But with all the information out there, and all the people around who simply seemed to accept everything supernatural as relatively normal (if they didn't before arrival, he didn't see how they could get along here without eventually getting used to it), it was hard not to talk like a hunter. So a lot of the time he simply avoided talking, if he couldn't think of anything relatively normal to say.
And there was the part of him that felt like he was sitting on a powder keg of potential supernatural disaster. He wasn't going to be the spark that set it off, but that didn't mean he was going to be stupid enough to expect that it would never happen. Which was why he had been working on compiling information on everyone here, mainly the histories and lore on the various kinds of creatures, and why he was getting to know his fellow hunters. Walking around with one in the dark wasn't so different from going for a late night run with a Commander from outer space, except in terms of how it might look to everyone else. He had to acknowledge that Angel had a point there.
So when he went to meet the vampire with a soul, he was careful not to draw attention to himself. He left Bolt in the room, largely because he couldn't count on the dog to stay quiet and inconspicuous when necessary. For all that it would have been a good cover to walk the dog at night-- since he did that frequently anyway-- he didn't feel that it was worth the risk. Just in case.
Since he was on his own, he made it to the back of the second tower without any problem, and stayed in the shadows beside the building, looking around for Angel. He was fairly well concealed, but with the vampire's extra senses, he ought to be able to pick up on Sam's presence fairly easily.
