It was strange, going from apprentice wizard to faerie queen, and from faerie queen to bartender. Molly found that she liked the latter change better. She supposed she was still actually a faerie queen; she still couldn't lie, and she still felt that uneasiness when things were out of balance, and the compulsion to hoard information was still there. She still didn't care for the summer heat, and she still had the extra rush of power that came with being the Winter Lady. The fact that she wasn't working all hours of the night in training with Queen Mab or the Leanansidhe, however, was a definite improvement. Now she served drinks, and she talked to people. Despite the dimensional jump, it was the calmest her life had ever been. Especially on a Saturday afternoon - the crowd wouldn't really pick up until nine or ten, so now everything was pleasantly low-key. She wasn't making much in tips that way, but it gave her time to practice using her magic to shape ice cubes into little animals or change the color of her hair. Presently it was platinum on bottom and purple above; later it might be blue or cotton candy pink. Faerie glamour made the experimentation nearly effortless. Her smile was effortless, too, as a new customer approached the bar. "Hey there!" she said. "What can I get you, hon?" |
