Kara had felt uncomfortable from the start. If a welcoming committee had come for her right away, she didn't know. Because she'd done everything she could to evade anyone for quite some time. Eventually she'd let herself be found and gotten what kind of a rundown they could give, and it was just as Grant had confirmed, Evil Queen, portal to another world. It made no sense but then what in her life did. Grant being here had helped. Had made things easier just for the few moments before she'd talked to him properly. And he'd told her he'd changed, told her he'd come here before SHIELD fell. That the Grant Ward she knew didn't exist here and instead she needed to put aside her need for answers and for closure.
Something had gone wrong. He'd still led the same life, still made the same choices up to a point. But she knew his story. And she didn't see where trusting SHIELD came into it. They didn't deserve his trust. They'd done something, made him accept blame for everything, Made...
They'd made him comply. In their own way.
Entering the diner he'd mentioned Kara was overcome with a memory of another diner, jokes, camaradirie. Pancakes. And a promise to help her find herself. She thought maybe it was then she'd started to fall for him. But that man wasn't here, and she was going to have to reconsile herself to the fact that she wasn't going to find her happiness and closure here.
Still, seeing him still stirred something in her. He had given her her world back though she had nothing to offer in return.
"Grant" she said softly, sliding into the booth opposite him and fighting an instictive urge to rest a hand on his own. He wasn't her Grant. And she needed to remember that.
"I'll be honest. I don't trust this, any of this, and I, I can't even say I trust that you're yourself right now. You have to understand, I don't see him, my... I know you. I know you probably better than anyone alive and yet I'm a stranger to you bar what the TV shows of me?"
