If anyone had asked him why he'd agreed to go meet a relative stranger for a drink, Malcolm Reynolds really wouldn't have had much of an answer. Normally this kind of thing, like he'd told Claire, didn't exactly go well. Even the fancy parties, which he admittedly had to swindle his way into, had a bad habit of ending in bloodshed and being stabbed with the pointy end of things he really would have rather avoided. Really all the punching and the stabbing would have been nice to avoid, but at least there wasn't exactly a lot of evidence to support the theory that was a thing he actually needed to worry about. Besides, the lady had seemed nice, for what that was worth, and was more than willing to put up with his rather boisterous persona -- and she was a Doctor. That was good as, despite the fact he hadn't needed one since arriving, his usual go-to was nowhere to be found. There seemed to be a lot of similarities there really and, as Mal was wandering up the approach to her door, he couldn't help but think that that was probably a thing he actually needed. As much as he trusted River, considered her one of his own, he knew there were just some things he was going to need a Doctor for -- and it'd be a damn cold day indeed before her turned that little Albatross over to any Doctor he didn't decide he could trust. Besides, if Simon showed up? Mal knew he'd never hear the end of it. Those were the reasons he told himself anyway. They were good enough, at least enough to appease himself at any rate. Still, Mal took a moment, adjusting his jacket on his shoulders before he raised a hand to gingerly rap out a little rhythm against Claire's door. |
