Storybrooke Maine hadn't done Jane all the favors in the world, but it was getting there. The place was confusing to say the least and, even with twice coming and going, she still found herself lost in it. It was bad enough having space stripped from her, or even the various monsters that had thrown themselves into this place since she'd been her. Even the arrival of Liara and the subsequent savior of Anders had done little to stem the tide of what she'd seen. Saren, the Reapers, all the losses Jane had suffered, they hung around her like echoes of a former life. At least now, with the comforting arms of her partner and the arrival of more of her crew, Jane was starting to believe that she could finally put things together. None of that mattered though, not now, not to Jane. Like she'd done a hundred times before, everything got set aside when she was needed. It was the same, even when the whole galaxy needed saving. There was never not enough time for Commander Jane Shepard to put it all aside and be there just as it was needed. It wasn't even a thought then, and certainly not tonight. Jane had wasted no time in dressing herself in her uniform before she'd told Liara what was going on, kissed her once, and had taken off out the door into a full sprint toward where she knew one of her best friends was waiting. These were the rare moments, the times when all the exhaustion and the fatigue slipped from her form. These were the moments, when there was some need for her, when Jane Shepard felt most like herself. There was a solace too in the fact that, this time, nothing was shooting at them. She wasn't racing across Rannoch, a memory that Tali wouldn't even have yet, to save the day. She wasn't dodging Reapers, or wading through a horde of Geth. She wasn't battling her way through and endless swarm of Collectors. She wasn't trying to save a life, she didn't have to make the hard call. This time, when Jane Shepard ran, she knew the only reason behind it was that it cut down the time it would take for her to wrap her arms around the Quarian who'd been like a sister to her. The sight of the environmental suit had been burned into Jane's mind long ago. The first glints of it on the outset of her vision slowed her run to a jog before dropping it to a confident stride. Despite how she was sure she looked, Jane couldn't help but smile as she closed the last few steps, cocking a hand on her hip and canting her head to offer the sound of her voice in greeting. "So. How many things have you disassembled already, and how many improvements have you figured out how to make?" |
