Clark Kent thought Smallville was pretty small, but he was fairly certain that Storybrooke was smaller than his home. Of course, Smallville was a farming community, so maybe it wasn't a fair assessment. At least back home, there was space to breathe. Here he felt claustrophobic. Normally, he'd fly out and soar into the stars thanks to the cover of night but he wasn't afforded that luxury here. There was a barrier around the town that kept them from leaving. It included space. He didn't dare try it. Besides, as to the brim this place seemed to be with strange heroes and "freaks" as the kids back home would say, Clark still felt protective of his secret--though some of the looks he got from people reminded him of when he sat around with Brainy or Rokk and they talked around his future that made him know people around here knew more about him than he cared for. Still, there were worst places to be. He'd seen a few planets in the UP with the Legion. He'd been the victim of some Xenophobia himself. They all had been. The fear of outsiders and other species was strong in many cultures. It's part of why his parents were so careful and afraid for him--because people wouldn't understand. At least here, they had pie. For all of the advancements in technology, there were some things lost in the future. One of them? Really good apple pie. Everything felt artificial and ... Well, not fresh. He sat in a booth by himself. He still didn't quite know anyone. There were a few nice people on the server, but he didn't quite have anyone he could call a friend. Not many people his age were around that he could see. Besides, as friendly as Clark was, he was also very shy. It's what frustrated Lana. There was a small pang when he thought of her. He wondered if she was still with Whitney. He wondered if she even noticed he was missing. He hoped Pete was doing okay, too. Most of all, he thought of his Ma and Pa. The farm was a tough business and they were a little older than most of the parents in town. He just hoped that they could manage without him. You kidding, he could hear his father say, we managed before you came along and we'll manage when you go to Metropolis U for school, son. He wore a small, sad smile and drank some of his hot chocolate. He'd have to go to the school soon. He half-wondered what the school would be like. He'd always assumed they were all alike but then that girl had told him not-so-much. He propped his head on his hand and picked at his pie. |
