WHO: Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy
WHAT: Awkward coffee tiems
WHERE: Granny's
WHEN: Backdated to just after their net conversation
RATING: Is there a rating system that involves painful awkwardness and FEELS? I would like to go with that one.
In some alternate universe Gwen Stacy was alive and well. She was walking around living and breathing and enjoying her life. Her dad was probably still alive somewhere out there too. Not only was Gwen alive and well but, apparently, she was the one who'd been bitten by a radioactive spider and given powers. While it raised questions about her world's Peter Parker (who he knew existed, Gwen had mentioned him) he found himself a little more focused on what she was like as a hero. What his Gwen would've been like. Not just as a hero but as a person. Would they have stayed together through college? Would they wind up getting married? Divorced? With children? Maybe, like what had eventually happend with MJ, the two of them would've reconsidered their relationship and gone their separate ways. Maybe she would've decided that the Spider-Man thing was just too much for her. In any case, Doc Ock would've managed to drive a wedge between them after he took over Peter's body. Or, well, maybe he wouldn't have. No one had actually noticed the mind switch but Gwen had known him better than anyone else. He liked to think she would've caught on. Shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants (which he now had thanks to a nun and a nearby clothing store who didn't seem all that surprised with the costume) he made his way to the diner. This was all so surreal he hadn't even begun to feel the weight of it yet. He'd made peace with Gwen's death and his stupid mistake (which didn't mean he'd stopped feeling guilty over it) and had allowed her memory to make him a better person, a stronger man, but that didn't mean it had ever really stopped hurting. Sometimes, all he really wanted to do was dial her number and get her perspective on things. Sometimes he just really missed the sound of her voice. It was more than the fact that he had loved her. She had been his friend. She had cared about him during a particularly difficult time in his life. Losing someone like Gwen never really stopped hurting. He just learned to deal with it. He learned how to appreciate her memory. How to look back on those days and smile instead of frown. None of that made this easier... or less awkward. Peter wasn't even sure what he was going to say to her once he finally saw her. Stepping into the diner he froze when he looked and saw a familiar face sitting across the room. If he changed the setting just a little, it was almost like he'd never lost her. Like they were just two college students on a rare but appreciated date. He was surprised by how much that could still ache. Taking a deep breath he forced himself to walk to the booth she was sitting in and take a seat. There was so much he never got to tell his Gwen. So much he would've told her if he got a chance but this wasn't his Gwen and everything he meant to say would sound wrong and weird and probably send her running for the door. So he wasn't going to do that. He was going to act normal and smile and be himself and pretend that this wasn't incredibly awkward. All he had to do was open his mouth and... "I didn't want you to be dead." His eyes grew wide as he realized what he said, a hand immediately come up to cover his mouth. "I mean... hi." On second thought, maybe he should just keep his mouth shut. |
