Notes:
Time in Storybrooke had moments where it seemed to move entirely in slow motion. Jane often equated it to years spent in a, day in day out, fight to save the galaxy. She chalked it up to having to sit still, to not having her ship, to not having her crew. It always put her at a loss, left her wondering just how to go about her days. It felt like drifting aimlessly through space more days than not, but Jane did her best to make a life of it. That's the thing she'd been fighting for after all, wasn't it? Sitting at her desk, Jane had rubbed her eyes. Sleep had been all the more elusive since the incident with the undead, the nightmares having had their volume turned up drastically. She'd been trying to start writing down her story. She knew, after some head banging on her part, that trying to phrase it as a warning for the future was no good to a people who hadn't even done space travel yet, but it felt good to get the words out and do something besides sit there with a head full of memories. She'd picked up the PDA mostly out of reflex, her paranoid mind wanting to be on top of things now just in case, and had barely been able to believe what she was seeing. Jane had already sprung from her chair and begun dressing by the time the messages started to get exchanged. Uniform. Boots. Well pressed. All official. Jane didn't think she'd ever gotten herself in such a state so quickly since boot camp but, if Storybrooke was going to give her even five more minutes with Liara then Jane was not going to waste it. Snatching up a warm jacket for Liara, just in case, Jane was out the door and didn't even bother to lock the door. The stairs were sprinted down, sometimes Jane skipping three at a time, because elevators were just too slow. A hot breath exhaled as Jane pushed through the doors of the tower and took off running for the park where the woman had said she'd landed. She didn't think she'd run so fast since the days of dodging Reapers on Rannoch. She didn't think she could have pushed herself any harder as Jane tore down the side of the road. She didn't think anything could have stopped her.. At least not until the Liara came into view and, this time, that delightful shade of blue even. The sprint slowed to a stall. The silent breaths caught in her throat as Jane kept her confidence moving forward. She knew she probably didn't look her best, she knew she'd been exhausted near to the point of collapse, but that didn't matter. Jane's eyes rapidly swept over Liara's figure, putting everything in its place. It had to confirm what she was seeing, to mak sure this wasn't another of Jane's dreams. Her mind snatched up the pieces, the parts where Liara really was here. It was real. It had to be. She tried to avoid letting the emotion run down the sides of her face. She tried to keep it on the simple level of the smile as she approached. She was Commander Jane Shepard, she'd stared down monsters, she'd saved worlds She had kept her calm as fire reigned down from the sky in pieces. She'd barely broken a sweat when she'd been blown up by Collectors. Keeping it together when she closed those last few steps? It didn't work. It couldn't work. Some things were just too big, but that didn't stop Jane from delivering the line with every last ounce of feeling she had.. "Somebody order a Hero?" |
