He preferred to think of it as checking in with rather than checking up on people. Steve had a natural instinct to reach out and make certain people were okay, especially during times of disturbance. Thanks to the portal, two people from his team had been taken away and he was widening the circle to see who else had been departed. It was something he could focus on that mattered, the people still around, rather than letting himself dwelling on the recent losses. Carol, one of his oldest friends, and Bucky, the man who Steve considered a brother dating back to WWII. Knowing the exact point in time that Bucky was going back to as well, and that once again Steve wouldn't be there to help see him through it, caused him to feel a growing ball of helpless frustration forming in his gut. He understood very well why Logan had left for the woods, the pain of letting people close only to have the roots being settled upended beneath you. It happened time and again in their world, with their personal lives. It never stopped Steve from opening his heart to someone else, but that didn't make it any easier when the clear shot to the vital organ was again pierced.
In the short time he'd known Sarah so far, he liked the woman. Her clear emotional reaction over being separated from her daughter had hit close to Steve, recent memories of Ian's loss still tucked into his head. He'd never thought at that moment not to reach out, in truth he'd done it for a lot less when new people arrived. They, everyone there, knew what it was like to be displaced. He had more than a few experiences with it back home. They were a community here, albeit a transient one, and one benefit of a community was reaching out and interweaving lives. The fact that she'd turned out to be a hard headed wiseass had only endeared her to him further. He surrounded himself with more than a few of those. He cared whether she was still in Storybrooke or not, and while he could have simply used the network, he had the time to do things as he preferred. In person. After going to the gym to let Jess hit out some of her frustration over Carol's departure, he made his way to Sarah's apartment. If she didn't answer he could try contacting over the network, but he figured to give this a shot first. Raising a hand he gave a knock on the door announcing his presence.
