He didn't make any comment on her appearance, not because he failed to notice the grim but because it was hardly something to put him off. He'd been caught out in much the same state more than once, and he knew to look past the dirt to know that there was a story for every layer of it. Multiple stories, even. The world she came from clearly had some good people, he figured it was the same one as Carl from her network post, but good people caught in a bad situation was still a rough hand to deal with. He was glad at least she had some people familiar to her here, to make the transition easier. To not have to worry the same way about them back home when they were cushioned in the relative safety of Storybrooke.
He smiled back as he shut the door behind her. Everything about her was unassuming and, so far, kind, but Steve knew enough not to mistake that for being soft. She'd lived through horrors and anyone who made it through intact enough to worry about manners meant there was a tough as nails interior. He could respect that combination.
"Don't worry about it, really," he said sincerely. "If you want to wash up some you're welcome to use my bathroom while I put things on the table, but don't feel you have to on my account. I was in the military for years, a little dirt is nothing to me." He said the last part lightly, but it was the truth. Days could be spent lying down in ditches, and you got to know your fellow soldiers in full color when that happened.
Noting her backpack he offered, "You can just put it on the sofa if you'd like. We're informal here." Normally he'd offer to take it himself and put it down, but they had only just met and he figured she might not be inclined to hand things over. That she'd come over at all showed a trust in people that Steve also appreciated, a willingness to believe that other people could have good intentions despite most of the world implying otherwise, but they were still getting to know one another at this point. "And good, big appetites are always welcome in this place. You'll get bragging rights if you manage to pack away more than me. Care for something to drink? We have water, iced tea and some soda."
