He offered a small, wry smile then. "I'd like to help you, if I can. Which might sound strange coming from a stranger but... well, I'm all right being strange and I've been in far weirder situations. I've had people lend me a hand in the past. The least I can do is pay it forward." That was one life lesson Steve held close. You didn't hold a bar for other people to jump and reach, you held one for yourself and acted accordingly. It wasn't about a set of scales and debts but being a decent person and thinking that others possessed decency inside, too. It was a way of being that had been called naive in the past, but Steve had seen too many people dig deep and reach out to care. Believing in others paid off, and if it paid off even once it was worth it.
