Having Cordelia back made things so much easier and so much more complicated all at the same time. As usual, she had stepped up almost immediately, helping with the research, proposing and covering the logistics of opening a new office in town, even working out a way for Angel to get the blood he needed without blowing his cover as human (what little of it remained, anyway -- the sheriff had figured it out, and his conspicuous absence from sunny spaces was hard to hide). Plus she was no longer dead, which was the biggest improvement in his life since he'd arrived here by far. But being around her and having to resist his attraction to her, that part made his life a lot more difficult. It was sort of like Buffy all over again. He was able to control himself better these days, but it still hurt like hell. Of course, he'd take that pain over the alternative of distancing himself from her, any day. That didn't make it any easier, though.
Or any less distracting. He'd slipped outside his building after the sun safely set, intending to surveil the other tower as he did every night. Katherine was in good hands, rooming with a Slayer, but Angel had promised to keep an eye on her and he didn't intend to break that promise. Unfortunately, once his thoughts wandered to the subject of Cordelia, they stayed there, and he accidentally stopped paying attention as closely as he should have been. He was still watching Katherine's building, and if Klaus had come or gone he would have noticed that. If any of the other people Katherine had mentioned walked by, he most likely would have spotted them too. But everyone else walking past him was pretty much a blur.
He didn't even realize a woman was approaching him directly. Ordinarily he would've seen or smelled or otherwise sensed her presence long before she got anywhere close to him, and his defenses would have been up, big time. They hadn't opened an office yet, which meant they hadn't started looking for clients (unless Katherine counted, and he had a feeling Cordy would say she didn't since she wasn't paying). Which meant there was no reason for someone he didn't know to come near him. Unfortunately, he was too wrapped up in his thoughts to notice this woman until she'd almost reached him. If she turned out to be dangerous, he was going to have to react fast because she just about had him cornered.
